Pinellia ternata
Herb TCM clé pour transformer le phlegm humide-froid ; sécheresse de la température, descended de l'énergie impétueuse et arrêt des vomissements.
Pinellia ternata (Ban Xia) is a fundamental herb in Traditional Chinese Medicine for transforming damp-cold phlegm, drying dampness, descending rebellious qi, and stopping vomiting. Its primary active compounds include ephedrine, choline, homogentisic acid, and beta-sitosterol. Modern research supports its antiemetic, expectorant, antitussive, and sedative effects, though clinical evidence is limited (Level C).
Ban Xia exhibits antiemetic effects via inhibition of the vomiting center and modulation of serotonin (5-HT3) receptors, while its expectorant and antitussive actions are attributed to saponins and alkaloids that reduce mucus viscosity and suppress the cough reflex. The herb also has sedative properties possibly through GABAergic pathways. Raw Ban Xia contains toxic calcium oxalate raphides and other irritants that are neutralized by processing with ginger or alum.
