Question 1

How does Coriaria arborea work as a pain reliever?

Accepted Answer

Coriaria arborea contains tutin and related neurotoxic sesquiterpenoids that act as glycine receptor antagonists in the central nervous system. By blocking inhibitory neurotransmission, these compounds can produce analgesic effects at extremely low concentrations. However, this same mechanism causes convulsions and respiratory paralysis at slightly higher doses. The therapeutic window is exceptionally narrow, which is why the plant has no accepted clinical applications despite its analgesic properties. Evidence Level: C (preclinical mechanistic studies).

Question 2

What are the side effects of Coriaria arborea (tutin)?

Accepted Answer

Coriaria arborea causes severe neurological toxicity even at low doses. Primary effects include violent convulsions, respiratory failure, and death. Symptoms typically begin within minutes to hours after exposure. The plant has caused numerous livestock deaths and human fatalities throughout New Zealand. There is no specific antidote for tutin poisoning. Traditional Māori preparations required extensive knowledge to minimize risk, and even then, the margin between therapeutic and lethal doses was dangerously narrow. Evidence Level: C (documented toxicological evidence).

Question 3

Is Coriaria arborea safe during pregnancy and breastfeeding?

Accepted Answer

Coriaria arborea is absolutely unsafe during pregnancy and breastfeeding. The active neurotoxic compounds, particularly tutin, can cross the blood-brain barrier and potentially affect fetal neurological development. The plant's convulsant properties pose severe risks to both the pregnant person and fetus. Traditional Māori use explicitly excluded pregnant individuals. There are no circumstances where use during pregnancy or breastfeeding would be appropriate. Evidence Level: C (preclinical evidence of neurotoxicity).

Question 4

What is the safe dosage of Coriaria arborea?

Accepted Answer

There is no established safe dosage for self-medication with Coriaria arborea. The plant is highly toxic, with the active compound tutin causing convulsions and potentially death at very small doses. Traditional Māori use involved extremely dilute preparations prepared with specialized knowledge, but the margin between therapeutic and toxic doses remains dangerously narrow. Self-medication is absolutely contraindicated. Any use should only occur under qualified medical supervision in controlled research settings. Evidence Level: C.

Question 5

Does Coriaria arborea interact with medications?

Accepted Answer

Due to its potent neurotoxic effects, Coriaria arborea may dangerously interact with central nervous system depressants, anticonvulsant medications, and anesthetics. The plant's convulsant properties could counteract anticonvulsant drugs, potentially triggering seizures in controlled epilepsy patients. Combining it with CNS depressants may produce unpredictable neurological effects. No formal drug interaction studies exist. Given the plant's extreme toxicity and lack of therapeutic applications, any concurrent medication use would be contraindicated. Evidence Level: C (theoretical based on mechanism).
