Fallopia multiflora
A climbing vine used in TCM whose stem (Ye Jiao Teng) is a milder alternative to the root for calming the spirit.
Fo Ti Vine (Fallopia multiflora, stem known as Ye Jiao Teng) is a traditional Chinese nervine used for calming the spirit and treating insomnia. Modern research indicates sedative, neuroprotective, and antioxidant activities attributed to compounds such as 2,3,5,4'-tetrahydroxystilbene-2-O-β-D-glucoside (THSG) and resveratrol. It is considered a milder alternative to the root (He Shou Wu) for sleep and anxiety support.
The sedative effects of Fo Ti Vine are mediated through modulation of GABAergic neurotransmission, possibly via interaction with GABA-A receptors. THSG exhibits antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties by activating the Nrf2 pathway and inhibiting NF-κB, contributing to neuroprotection. Emodin and resveratrol further support vascular health through endothelial nitric oxide synthase (eNOS) upregulation and platelet aggregation inhibition. Additionally, the herb may influence serotonin and dopamine systems, though clinical evidence remains limited.
