Piper angustifolium
Peruvian pepper plant used by Incas and Spanish colonial physicians for wound healing and sexually transmitted infections.
Matico (Piper angustifolium) is a Peruvian medicinal plant traditionally used for wound healing and as a hemostatic, with historical applications for sexually transmitted infections. Its primary active compounds include maticin, beta-sitosterol, apiol, and tannins, which contribute to antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, and hemostatic properties. Modern evidence is limited (Grade C), but preliminary studies support its traditional uses.
Maticin and other sesquiterpene lactones disrupt bacterial cell membranes, providing antimicrobial activity. Tannins exert hemostatic effects by precipitating proteins and constricting blood vessels, while beta-sitosterol inhibits cyclooxygenase and lipoxygenase pathways, reducing inflammation. Apiol may stimulate uterine smooth muscle, explaining its traditional use for menstrual issues but also its contraindication in pregnancy.
