Oenanthe crocata
European wetland Apiaceae - one of the most poisonous plants in Europe; included for recognition warning.
Oenanthe crocata, commonly known as hemlock water dropwort, is one of the most toxic plants in Europe, containing the potent GABA receptor antagonist oenanthotoxin. It has no recognized medicinal use and is included solely as a warning due to its extreme lethality and resemblance to edible Apiaceae species.
Oenanthotoxin acts as a non-competitive antagonist at GABA-A receptors, blocking chloride ion conductance and leading to uncontrolled neuronal excitation. This results in seizures, respiratory failure, and death. The compound also exhibits direct cardiotoxicity and may interfere with glutamate pathways, exacerbating excitotoxicity.
