Paeonia veitchii
TCM blood-moving herb that clears heat, cools blood, and dispels stasis; used for gynecological conditions.
Paeonia veitchii is a traditional Chinese medicinal herb used primarily to clear heat from the blood, dispel blood stasis, and alleviate pain, especially in gynecological conditions. Its key active compounds include paeoniflorin, oxypaeoniflorin, and benzoylpaeoniflorin, which contribute to its anti-inflammatory, antithrombotic, and cardiovascular protective effects. Despite limited clinical evidence (Level C), it remains widely used in TCM formulations.
Paeoniflorin, the major monoterpene glycoside, exerts anti-inflammatory effects by inhibiting NF-κB activation and reducing pro-inflammatory cytokines such as TNF-α and IL-6. It also modulates platelet aggregation via suppression of thromboxane A2 and enhancement of cAMP levels, contributing to antithrombotic activity. Additionally, paeoniflorin activates the PI3K/Akt pathway, providing cardioprotective effects against ischemia-reperfusion injury. Other compounds like gallic acid and catechin contribute antioxidant and vasodilatory actions through NO-mediated pathways.
