Platycladus orientalis
TCM sedative seed for heart blood deficiency with insomnia; used topically for hair loss.
Platycladus orientalis (Bai Zi Ren) is a Traditional Chinese Medicine sedative seed used primarily for heart blood deficiency presenting with insomnia, palpitations, and anxiety. Its key active compounds include biotalin, thujopsene, pimaric acid, and abietic acid, which contribute to its anxiolytic, mild laxative, and hair growth-promoting effects. The herb is also applied topically for alopecia and is supported by limited clinical evidence (Level C).
The sedative and anxiolytic effects of Platycladus orientalis are attributed to modulation of GABA-A receptors and serotonin (5-HT) pathways, likely via biotalin and thujopsene, which enhance inhibitory neurotransmission. The laxative action is due to fatty acids and abietic acid stimulating intestinal peristalsis and fluid secretion. For hair growth, flavonoids and pimaric acid may improve scalp microcirculation and inhibit androgen receptor signaling, though mechanisms remain preliminary. Additionally, the herb exhibits anti-inflammatory and antioxidant activities through NF-κB and Nrf2 pathways.
