Tanacetum annuum
Moroccan Asteraceae producing the famous blue essential oil used for anti-inflammatory and skin conditions.
Tanacetum annuum (blue tansy) essential oil, rich in chamazulene, camphor, sabinene, and alpha-pinene, is traditionally used in Moroccan folk medicine for skin conditions and inflammation. Modern evidence (Level C) supports its anti-inflammatory, antiallergic, and wound-healing properties, primarily attributed to chamazulene's inhibition of leukotriene synthesis and modulation of pro-inflammatory cytokines. The oil is applied topically in diluted form (1-2 drops) but requires caution due to potential skin sensitization and contraindications in pregnancy, epilepsy, and those with skin allergies.
Chamazulene, the primary active compound, inhibits 5-lipoxygenase and cyclooxygenase pathways, reducing leukotriene and prostaglandin synthesis, and also modulates NF-κB signaling to decrease pro-inflammatory cytokines (IL-6, TNF-α). Camphor acts as a counterirritant and mild analgesic via TRPV1 receptor activation, while sabinene and alpha-pinene contribute additional anti-inflammatory effects through suppression of iNOS and COX-2 expression. The combination of these compounds also promotes wound healing by enhancing fibroblast proliferation and collagen deposition.
