Ehretia asperula
A Vietnamese herb used extensively for liver conditions, jaundice, and hepatitis in traditional medicine.
Xa Den (Ehretia asperula) is a Vietnamese herb traditionally used for liver conditions, jaundice, and hepatitis. Modern research indicates hepatoprotective, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant activities, attributed to its alkaloids, flavonoids, and tannins. It is commonly used in fresh form at doses of 15-30g daily.
The hepatoprotective effects of Ehretia asperula are mediated through upregulation of antioxidant enzymes such as superoxide dismutase and glutathione peroxidase, reducing oxidative stress in hepatocytes. Its flavonoids inhibit pro-inflammatory cytokines like TNF-α and IL-6 via modulation of NF-κB pathway. Additionally, alkaloids may enhance bile secretion and promote liver cell regeneration.
