Abelmoschus Moschatus Herb (Abelmoschus moschatus): Benefits, Dosage, Safety & Evidence

Frequently asked questions

How does Abelmoschus moschatus work as a digestive stimulant?

Abelmoschus moschatus contains ambrettolide and farnesyl acetate, compounds believed to stimulate digestive secretions and exert antispasmodic effects on smooth muscle. These constituents may enhance gastric motility while reducing intestinal cramping. The herb's aromatic properties may also influence the vagus nerve, which plays a key role in digestive regulation. Evidence level: C (preliminary research and traditional use).

Does Abelmoschus moschatus interact with heart medications?

Abelmoschus moschatus is contraindicated for individuals with heart conditions due to its cardiac stimulant properties. It may theoretically interact with cardiac medications such as beta-blockers, digoxin, or antiarrhythmic drugs, potentially amplifying or interfering with their effects. Patients taking prescription heart medications should avoid this herb and consult a qualified healthcare provider before use.

What is the recommended dosage for Abelmoschus moschatus?

The traditional adult dosage for Abelmoschus moschatus is 1-3 grams of seeds prepared as a tea. For aromatherapy applications, the essential oil must be properly diluted before use. Due to limited clinical evidence (Level C), individuals should start with the lowest effective dose. Consult a qualified herbalist or healthcare practitioner for personalized dosing guidance.

Is Abelmoschus moschatus safe during pregnancy?

No, Abelmoschus moschatus is considered unsafe during pregnancy and is explicitly contraindicated for pregnant women. The herb may possess emmenagogue and uterine-stimulating properties that could increase the risk of miscarriage or premature labor. Both internal consumption and concentrated aromatherapy applications should be avoided during pregnancy. Breastfeeding women should also consult a healthcare provider before use.

What is Abelmoschus moschatus used for in Ayurvedic medicine?

In Ayurvedic medicine, Abelmoschus moschatus (musk mallow) is traditionally used as a digestive tonic and stimulant. It has been employed to support cardiac function, relieve muscle spasms, and address low mood through its aromatic antidepressant properties. The seeds are valued for their musk-like fragrance and are also used in perfumery. Evidence level: C (primarily traditional use and preliminary research).

What are the side effects of Abelmoschus moschatus?

Abelmoschus moschatus is generally well-tolerated when used at recommended doses. Rare side effects may include allergic skin reactions, particularly with topical application of the essential oil. Individuals with known sensitivities to plants in the Malvaceae family should exercise caution. Due to limited safety data, discontinue use if any adverse reactions occur and consult a healthcare professional.

Summary

Abelmoschus moschatus (Ambrette) is an aromatic medicinal plant used in traditional medicine for kidney-related diseases and metabolic disorders [PMID:35339624, PMID:19610024].

Background

Abelmoschus moschatus (Family: Malvaceae) is an aromatic plant distributed in various parts of Asia, including south Taiwan and Sri Lanka [PMID:19610024, PMID:32655655].

Traditional uses

It is used in Ayurvedic medicine for kidney-related diseases in forms such as tea, medicated oil, and medicated wine [PMID:35339624]. Aromatic seeds are traditionally used as aphrodisiacs, cardio tonics, antispasmodics, and for treating intestinal complaints and queasiness [PMID:21849051].

Active compounds

Identified compounds include the flavonoid myricetin [PMID:16041646], hyperoside [PMID:35325199], and polyphenolic flavonoids [PMID:19610024]. Seed oil contains farnesol acetate (51.45%) and ambrettolide (12.96%) [PMID:25551188]. Seed extracts contain nitrogen-containing compounds including 27 pyrazine derivatives, 12 pyridines, and seven thiazoles [PMID:18656937], as well as four trypsin inhibitors (AMTI-I to IV) [PMID:25701144]. Glycinebetaine was not detected in this species [PMID:11557077].

Mechanism of action

Myricetin lowers plasma glucose by enhancing glucose utilization in the soleus muscles and glycogen synthesis in hepatocytes [PMID:16041646], mediated by the release of beta-endorphin-like immunoreactivity (BER) and increasing expression of glucose transporter subtype 4 (GLUT 4) [PMID:16203117]. Leaf extracts demonstrate nephroprotective effects by ameliorating oxidative stress and inflammation [PMID:35339624]. Seed oil exhibits antibacterial activity by increasing alkaline phosphatase (ALP), lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), and protein leakage in bacteria [PMID:25551188].

Clinical evidence

Evidence ADiabetic Nephropathy

Abelmoschus moschatus capsules combined with tripterygium glycoside tablets showed excellent results in treatment, though specific meta-analysis outcomes were not detailed in the abstract [PMID:36172199]

Evidence DAcute Kidney Injury (Rat Model)

Oral administration of hexane, ethyl acetate, butanol, and aqueous leaf extracts ameliorated kidney injury, improving biomarkers of kidney function and reducing oxidative stress and inflammation [PMID:35339624]

Evidence DUrolithiasis (Rat Model)

Chloroform and methanolic seed extracts significantly improved glomerular filtration and decreased urinary output in zinc disc-induced urolithiasis [PMID:27057124]

Evidence DInsulin Resistance/Diabetes (Rat Model)

Extracts and purified myricetin reduced HOMA-IR index, elevated ISIcomp, and lowered plasma glucose in fructose-fed and STZ-diabetic rats [PMID:19610024, PMID:16041646, PMID:17694473]

Safety & adverse effects

In a 28-day repeated-dose oral toxicity study in Wistar rats, hexane and aqueous leaf extracts produced no significant changes in hematological profiles or selected biochemical parameters [PMID:32655655].

Evidence summary

Evidence is primarily based on in vitro assays and animal models (Level D), with one systematic review (Level A) regarding combined therapy for diabetic nephropathy.
