Question 1

How does bogmyrtle work as an insect repellent?

Accepted Answer

Bogmyrtle contains volatile aromatic compounds, primarily sesquiterpenes, which create a strong scent that masks human odors and directly repels insects. The essential oil components disrupt insect olfactory receptors, preventing them from locating hosts. This traditional use is supported by ethnobotanical evidence (Evidence Level C) from Norse and Scottish folk medicine, where it was historically valued for protection against biting insects in peat bog environments.

Question 2

Does bogmyrtle interact with any medications?

Accepted Answer

Limited clinical research exists on bogmyrtle drug interactions. The tannin content may theoretically reduce absorption of certain medications, particularly alkaloids and iron, if taken simultaneously. Due to insufficient safety data, individuals taking prescription medications should consult a healthcare provider before use. No specific documented interactions exist in current literature, but caution is warranted given the herb's chemical profile and lack of clinical trials.

Question 3

What is the recommended dosage of bogmyrtle?

Accepted Answer

The traditional adult dosage for bogmyrtle tea is 2-4 grams of dried leaves, prepared as an infusion, taken twice daily. For topical use as an insect repellent, a stronger infusion can be prepared and applied to skin or clothing. Internal use should be limited to recommended amounts, as large doses may be toxic. Evidence for these dosages is based on traditional use (Evidence Level C) rather than clinical trials.

Question 4

Is bogmyrtle safe during pregnancy and breastfeeding?

Accepted Answer

Bogmyrtle is contraindicated during pregnancy and breastfeeding. Traditional use and phytochemical analysis suggest potential uterine-stimulating properties, and the essential oil components may pose risks to fetal development. Nursing mothers should also avoid bogmyrtle, as active compounds may pass into breast milk. Women who are pregnant, planning pregnancy, or breastfeeding should not use this herb internally or topically without medical supervision.

Question 5

What are the traditional uses of bogmyrtle?

Accepted Answer

Bogmyrtle has been used traditionally as an insect repellent, particularly in Norse and Scottish folk medicine for protection in peat bog environments. It was historically employed as a bittering agent in ale before hops became standard in medieval Europe. Additional traditional applications include supporting digestive conditions and treating skin conditions topically. Current evidence supporting these uses is limited (Evidence Level C), based primarily on ethnobotanical records.
