How does Citrus medica work as a digestive aid?

Citrus medica peel contains active compounds, including flavonoids like hesperidin and volatile essential oils, which function as carminatives. These constituents are believed to relax gastrointestinal smooth muscle to relieve spasms and bloating while stimulating gastric secretions to improve digestion. Evidence Level: C.

Does Citrus medica interact with prescription medications?

Unlike grapefruit, Citrus medica is not widely associated with strong cytochrome P450 inhibition, suggesting a lower risk of major drug interactions. However, patients with citrus allergies should strictly avoid it. Due to limited specific clinical data, individuals taking prescription medications should consult a healthcare provider before use. Evidence Level: C.

What is the typical dosage for Citrus medica peel?

Traditional usage suggests a dosage of 5 to 10 grams of dried Citrus medica peel prepared as a tea, taken twice daily. In some cultures, preserved peel is consumed as a digestive tonic. Because evidence is rated Level C, these recommendations are based on historical use rather than standardized clinical trials.

Is Citrus medica safe to use during pregnancy?

Citrus medica is generally considered safe during pregnancy when consumed in food amounts or traditional medicinal doses. The fruit provides vitamin C and has a history of use without reported teratogenic effects. However, pregnant women should avoid excessive consumption to prevent gastrointestinal upset from high acidity. Evidence Level: C/Traditional.

What is Citrus medica used for in herbal medicine?

Citrus medica is primarily used as a digestive tonic to relieve nausea, indigestion, and respiratory complaints. The peel is valued in Ayurveda for settling the stomach and reducing fever. While these uses are supported by a long history of traditional application, clinical evidence is currently rated Level C.

Summary

Citrus medica (citron) is an edible and medicinal plant used for its antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, and antiviral properties [PMID:37375892, PMID:29594287].

Background

Citrus medica, also known as citron or Etrog citron, is a member of the Rutaceae family [PMID:37375892, PMID:41012509]. It is cultivated for medicinal, edible, and ornamental purposes, with significant production in China [PMID:34951256, PMID:39427793].

Traditional uses

In traditional Chinese diagnosis, it is used for relieving pain, harmonizing the stomach, removing dampness, reducing phlegm, cleaning the liver, and relieving qi [PMID:37005516]. It has been used for over two thousand years in China for soothing the liver and regulating qi [PMID:40122317].

Active compounds

Bioactive components include flavonoids (apigenin, hesperetin, hesperidin, naringin, naringenin, rutin, quercetin, and diosmin), coumarins (citropten, scoparone, and bergapten), terpenes (limonene, γ-terpinene, limonin, and nomilin), and phenolic acids (p-coumaric acid, trans-ferulic acid, and chlorogenic acid) [PMID:37375892]. Other identified compounds include iso-limonene, citral, pectin, linalool, decanal, and nonanal [PMID:29594287]. Polysaccharides (FCPs) are key bioactive components of the var. sarcodactylis (fingered citron) [PMID:39427793].

Clinical evidence

Evidence AMigraine

Positive, preliminary findings on the efficacy of citron [PMID:32310327]

Evidence DAnxiety

Citrus medica L. essential oil (CEO) is evaluated for therapeutic effects on anxiety-like behaviors accompanied by fatigue through α7-nAChR receptor-mediated neuroprotection [PMID:40122317]

Evidence summary

Evidence is primarily based on systematic reviews of herbal treatments for migraine and in vitro/review data regarding phytochemical properties; clinical data for specific conditions is limited and preliminary.
