Cyclopia subternata (Cyclopia subternata): Benefits, Dosage, Safety & Evidence

Frequently asked questions

How does honeybush tea help with menopause symptoms?

Honeybush tea (Cyclopia subternata) contains phytoestrogenic compounds, including mangiferin, isomangiferin, and luteolin, which can bind to estrogen receptors in the body. These plant-derived compounds may exert weak estrogenic activity, potentially helping to modulate hormonal fluctuations during menopause. The herb also provides antioxidant effects that may support overall cellular health. Evidence for these mechanisms is rated Level C, based primarily on in vitro and animal studies rather than large-scale human clinical trials.

Can honeybush tea interact with hormone medications?

Yes, honeybush tea may interact with hormone-sensitive medications due to its phytoestrogenic compounds. Individuals taking hormone replacement therapy (HRT), oral contraceptives, or medications for hormone-sensitive conditions should exercise caution. The phytoestrogens in Cyclopia subternata could theoretically alter the effectiveness of these medications or compound hormonal effects. Evidence for these interactions is theoretical (Level C), based on the herb's known constituents rather than documented clinical cases. Consult a healthcare provider before combining with hormonal treatments.

How much honeybush tea is safe to drink daily?

The traditional adult dosage for honeybush tea is 2-4 grams of dried herb steeped as a tea, consumed once or twice daily. This amount has been used traditionally in South Africa for generations as a general health tonic and for menopausal support. There is insufficient clinical evidence to establish a standardized therapeutic dose. Start with the lower end of the range and assess tolerance. Those with hormone-sensitive conditions should avoid regular consumption without medical supervision.

Is honeybush tea safe during pregnancy?

No, honeybush tea is not recommended during pregnancy. Cyclopia subternata contains phytoestrogenic compounds that could potentially affect hormonal balance during pregnancy. Due to insufficient safety data and theoretical risks to fetal development from plant estrogens, pregnant women should avoid consuming honeybush tea. This contraindication is based on the herb's known constituents and general precaution for phytoestrogenic herbs during pregnancy (Evidence Level C). Breastfeeding women should also consult a healthcare provider before use.

What are the health benefits of drinking honeybush tea?

Honeybush tea has been traditionally used in South Africa as an antioxidant-rich beverage supporting respiratory health and general wellness. The herb contains high levels of mangiferin and isomangiferin, compounds with demonstrated antioxidant activity. Some evidence suggests potential benefits for menopausal symptom relief due to phytoestrogenic properties. However, human clinical research is limited (Evidence Level C), and most claims are based on traditional use and laboratory studies rather than rigorous clinical trials. The tea is naturally caffeine-free.

Summary

Cyclopia subternata is a South African shrub used to produce honeybush tea, recognized for its rich polyphenol content and antioxidant properties [PMID:15315375, PMID:37299160].

Background

Cyclopia subternata is one of several endemic South African shrub species used to brew honeybush tea [PMID:15315375, PMID:35033263]. It is characterized by a pleasant flavor, low tannin content, and the absence of caffeine [PMID:15315375, PMID:19032980].

Traditional uses

Since the 19th century, honeybush tea has been consumed to treat various medical ailments [PMID:23428403]. It has been used as a tonic for colds, influenza, catarrh, and pulmonic tuberculosis, and is noted for alleviating menopausal symptoms in women [PMID:15315375]. It is also used in traditional medicine to relieve pain [PMID:26243020].

Active compounds

Major compounds include the flavonoid phloretin-3',5'-di-C-glucoside [PMID:23428403], xanthones such as mangiferin and isomangiferin [PMID:15315375, PMID:19791506, PMID:19272608], and flavanones including hesperidin, narirutin, and eriocitrin [PMID:15315375, PMID:19791506]. Other identified constituents include pinitol, shikimic acid, p-coumaric acid, 4-glucosyltyrosol, epigallocatechin gallate, the isoflavone orobol, flavones luteolin, 5-deoxyluteolin, and scolymoside [PMID:15315375].

Mechanism of action

Honeybush extracts exhibit antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities [PMID:19032980, PMID:32405387]. Specific mechanisms include the inhibition of adipogenesis via decreased PPARγ2 expression [PMID:23428403], anti-degranulation activity in allergic responses [PMID:38966058], and the suppression of HMGB1-mediated septic responses, including the inhibition of proinflammatory proteins and leukocyte adhesion [PMID:26243020]. In cancer cells, extracts may induce cell death via autophagy and ATP depletion [PMID:39139978].

Clinical evidence

Evidence DObesity (In vitro/Animal)

Hot water extracts of C. subternata inhibit adipogenesis and intracellular triglyceride accumulation in 3T3-L1 pre-adipocytes [PMID:23428403].

Evidence DUV-induced skin damage (Animal)

Topical application of honeybush extracts reduced signs of sunburn (erythema, peeling, hardening) and reduced epidermal hyperplasia and COX-2 induction in SKH-1 mice [PMID:21435898].

Evidence DAllergy (Animal)

Extracts significantly suppressed anaphylactic reaction-induced body temperature decline and inhibited antigen-antibody-induced degranulation in a murine model [PMID:38966058].

Evidence DSepsis (In vitro/Animal)

Active compounds vicenin-2 and scolymoside inhibited lipopolysaccharide-induced release of HMGB1 and suppressed septic responses in HUVECs and mice [PMID:26243020].

Evidence DCancer (In vitro)

C. subternata extracts reduced cell viability and inhibited proliferation in human liver (HepG2) and colon (HT-29) cancer cells [PMID:39139978]. A specific extract (SM6Met) showed synergistic inhibition of MCF7 breast cancer cell proliferation when combined with tamoxifen [PMID:36210845].

Safety & adverse effects

No adverse effects of honeybush consumption as tisanes have been reported [PMID:16927447].

Evidence summary

The current evidence is primarily based on in vitro studies and animal models (Level D), demonstrating significant antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and photoprotective properties. There are no reported human clinical trials.
