Packera aurea
Free herbal dosage calculator — adult & child doses by weight.
Life Root (Packera aurea) contains pyrrolizidine alkaloids such as senecionine and integerrimine, which are believed to stimulate uterine smooth muscle contractions. The herb also contains flavonoids and tannins that may contribute to its traditional use as a uterine tonic. These compounds work together to promote menstrual flow and support post-partum recovery. However, the same pyrrolizidine alkaloids responsible for its therapeutic effects also pose hepatotoxic risks, limiting its safe therapeutic window. Evidence level: C.
Life Root (Packera aurea) has significant drug interaction potential, particularly with medications metabolized by the liver. Due to its pyrrolizidine alkaloid content, it should not be combined with hepatotoxic medications, as this may compound the risk of liver damage. It may also interact with hormonal medications due to its effects on the uterus. Patients taking liver-affecting drugs, hormone therapies, or anticoagulants should avoid Life Root. Always consult a healthcare provider before combining with prescription medications. Evidence level: C.
The traditional adult dosage for Life Root (Packera aurea) tincture is 0.5-1ml taken twice daily. This should only be used short-term due to the presence of hepatotoxic pyrrolizidine alkaloids. Extended use beyond a few weeks is contraindicated due to cumulative liver toxicity risks. The tincture should be prepared by a qualified herbalist or purchased from reputable sources. Always follow professional guidance and discontinue use immediately if any adverse symptoms occur. Evidence level: C (Traditional use).
Life Root (Packera aurea) is unsafe during pregnancy and should be strictly avoided. As a uterine stimulant, it can cause uterine contractions that may lead to miscarriage or premature labor. The pyrrolizidine alkaloids present in this herb are also contraindicated during pregnancy due to potential fetal toxicity. Breastfeeding women should also avoid Life Root, as pyrrolizidine alkaloids can be transmitted through breast milk and may harm the infant's developing liver. Evidence level: C.
Life Root (Packera aurea) carries significant safety concerns due to its pyrrolizidine alkaloid content. The primary risks include hepatotoxicity (liver damage) and veno-occlusive liver disease, particularly with prolonged use. Symptoms of toxicity may include abdominal pain, jaundice, fatigue, and liver enlargement. These effects can be cumulative and potentially irreversible. Short-term use at recommended doses minimizes but does not eliminate risk. Individuals with pre-existing liver conditions should avoid this herb entirely. Evidence level: C.
Life Root (Packera aurea) has been used traditionally by several Native American nations, including the Cherokee and Menominee, primarily as a women's herb. Traditional applications include use as a uterine tonic for menstrual regulation, treating amenorrhea (absent menstruation), supporting post-partum recovery, and addressing urinary conditions. The herb was valued for its ability to stimulate uterine function and promote menstrual flow. These uses are based on traditional knowledge rather than clinical trials. Evidence level: C.
