Scallion Root

Scallion root (Allium fistulosum radix) works through its active compounds, primarily allicin and sulfur compounds, which exhibit antimicrobial and diaphoretic properties. In Traditional Chinese Medicine, it functions as an exterior-releasing herb that disperses wind-cold pathogens from the body's surface. The sulfur compounds, including methylallyl trisulfide, stimulate sweating and peripheral circulation, while quercetin provides additional anti-inflammatory effects. This combination promotes perspiration to expel pathogens and supports immune response during early-stage colds (Evidence level: C).

Scallion root may interact with anticoagulant and antiplatelet medications due to its sulfur compounds, which can affect blood clotting. Patients taking warfarin, aspirin, clopidogrel, or other blood thinners should exercise caution. Additionally, its diaphoretic action may enhance the effects of fever-reducing medications. Limited clinical evidence exists for specific drug interactions (Evidence level: C), so patients taking prescription medications should consult a qualified healthcare provider before using scallion root preparations.

The standard adult dosage for scallion root (Cong Bai) is 3-9 grams of fresh bulb prepared as a decoction for acute illness. This dosage is based on traditional Chinese Medicine texts and clinical practice (Evidence level: C). The decoction is typically prepared by boiling the fresh herb in water for 10-15 minutes. Due to its diaphoretic nature, it should only be used for short durations during acute cold episodes and discontinued once symptoms improve or sweating becomes excessive.

Scallion root is considered unsafe during pregnancy and should be avoided. Its strong diaphoretic action, which promotes sweating and disperses exterior pathogens, can potentially disrupt pregnancy by causing excessive fluid loss. The active sulfur compounds may also stimulate circulation and uterine activity. Pregnant women experiencing cold symptoms should consult a qualified healthcare provider for pregnancy-safe alternatives. This safety classification is based on traditional Chinese Medicine contraindications (Evidence level: C).

In Traditional Chinese Medicine, scallion root (Cong Bai) is primarily used as an acute cold-dispelling herb for treating early-stage wind-cold patterns. It is indicated for symptoms such as chills, mild fever, nasal congestion, and headache. The herb is commonly included in classical formulas like Cong Bai Tang for its exterior-releasing and wind-cold dispersal properties. It also demonstrates antimicrobial activity against various pathogens. Scallion root is most effective when used at the onset of symptoms (Evidence level: C).

Scallion root should be avoided by individuals with deficiency conditions, those experiencing profuse sweating, and pregnant women. Common side effects include increased sweating and gastrointestinal upset. Because it is a strong diaphoretic herb that releases exterior pathogens, it can deplete qi and body fluids in already weakened individuals. Patients with chronic illness, spontaneous sweating, or yin deficiency should not use this herb. It is contraindicated when sweating is already profuse (Evidence level: C).
