Question 1

How does Ye Jiao Teng work for insomnia?

Accepted Answer

Ye Jiao Teng contains stilbene glycosides and flavonoids that exert sedative effects on the central nervous system. These compounds appear to modulate GABAergic neurotransmission and reduce oxidative stress in neural tissues. In Traditional Chinese Medicine, the herb nourishes heart blood and calms the spirit (shen), addressing the underlying pattern causing sleep disturbances. This dual mechanism—pharmacological sedation plus traditional blood nourishment—makes it particularly effective for dream-disturbed sleep. Evidence level: C.

Question 2

Does Ye Jiao Teng interact with any medications?

Accepted Answer

Ye Jiao Teng has no well-documented drug interactions. However, caution is advised when combining with sedatives, antidepressants, or anti-anxiety medications due to potential additive CNS depressant effects. Unlike the processed root (He Shou Wu), the vine form has not been associated with hepatotoxicity concerns. Patients taking blood thinners should consult a healthcare provider, as compounds may affect platelet aggregation. Evidence level: C (limited clinical interaction data available).

Question 3

What is the recommended dosage for Ye Jiao Teng?

Accepted Answer

The standard adult dosage for Ye Jiao Teng is 15-30 grams daily when prepared as a decoction. For insomnia, practitioners typically recommend taking it in the evening before bedtime. The herb can also be found in powder, tincture, or patent formula forms. Lower doses may be appropriate for elderly patients or those with sensitive digestion. Always follow practitioner guidance for individualized dosing. Evidence level: C (based on traditional use and clinical practice guidelines).

Question 4

Is Ye Jiao Teng safe during pregnancy?

Accepted Answer

Ye Jiao Teng is generally considered safe during pregnancy at recommended doses according to Traditional Chinese Medicine sources. The herb has a low toxicity profile and does not contain the potentially hepatotoxic compounds associated with the processed root form. However, pregnant women should consult a qualified healthcare provider before use, as comprehensive safety studies in pregnancy are limited. Evidence level: Traditional.

Question 5

What is Ye Jiao Teng used for in TCM?

Accepted Answer

Ye Jiao Teng is primarily used for insomnia, dream-disturbed sleep, and restlessness in Traditional Chinese Medicine. It also addresses body aches, skin itching, and generalized anxiety. As the vine of He Shou Wu, it nourishes heart blood and calms the shen (spirit), making it particularly suited for sleep disorders accompanied by vivid dreams or frequent waking. It is often combined with Suan Zao Ren for enhanced sedative effects. Evidence level: C.

Question 6

What are the side effects of Ye Jiao Teng?

Accepted Answer

Ye Jiao Teng is well-tolerated by most individuals. Reported side effects are mild and may include gastrointestinal upset, loose stools, or mild nausea, particularly when taken on an empty stomach or at higher doses. Unlike the processed root form of Polygonum multiflorum, the vine has not been associated with liver toxicity. Discontinue use if adverse reactions occur and consult a healthcare provider. Evidence level: C.
