Ageratum conyzoides
Une adventice pantropicale utilisée couramment dans la médecine traditionnelle africaine, asiatique et sud-américaine pour la cicatrisation des plaies, la fièvre, la rhumatisme et les affections respiratoires.
Ageratum conyzoides is a pantropical weed used in traditional medicine across Africa, Asia, and South America for wound healing, fever, rheumatism, and respiratory complaints. Its primary modern applications include anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, and analgesic effects, attributed to active compounds such as pyrrolizidine alkaloids, flavonoids, chromenes, and essential oils. Evidence for its efficacy is limited (Level C), with most data derived from preclinical and small clinical studies.
The anti-inflammatory activity of Ageratum conyzoides is mediated through inhibition of cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) and lipoxygenase (LOX) pathways, as well as suppression of nuclear factor-kappa B (NF-κB) activation, reducing pro-inflammatory cytokine production. Antimicrobial effects are due to essential oils and flavonoids disrupting bacterial cell membranes and inhibiting biofilm formation. Analgesic properties involve both peripheral and central mechanisms, including opioid receptor modulation and inhibition of prostaglandin synthesis. However, pyrrolizidine alkaloids (PAs) present in the plant can cause hepatotoxicity through metabolic activation to reactive pyrrolic metabolites that form DNA and protein adducts.
