Cleome gynandra
Herbe annuelle originaire d'Afrique tropicale et d'Asie, utilisée comme légume et médecine à travers le sous-saharien africain pour les maux de tête, les infections, les affections respiratoires et les troubles digestifs.
Cleome gynandra, also known as spider plant or cat's whiskers, is an annual herb native to tropical Africa and Asia, used both as a leafy vegetable and in traditional medicine. Modern research suggests it possesses analgesic, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, and antispasmodic properties, attributed to its content of glucosinolates, flavonoids, alkaloids, and saponins. Evidence is primarily from in vitro and animal studies, with limited clinical data.
The analgesic and anti-inflammatory effects are mediated through inhibition of cyclooxygenase (COX) and lipoxygenase (LOX) pathways, reducing prostaglandin and leukotriene synthesis. Flavonoids such as quercetin and kaempferol contribute to antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activity by scavenging free radicals and modulating NF-κB signaling. Glucosinolates and their breakdown products (isothiocyanates) exhibit antimicrobial properties against a range of bacteria and fungi. Antispasmodic effects may involve calcium channel blockade and modulation of smooth muscle contraction.
