Question 1

How does Astragalus complanatus work in the body?

Accepted Answer

Astragalus complanatus contains bioactive compounds including complanatin, astragalosides, kaempferol, and quercetin that contribute to its therapeutic effects. These compounds demonstrate antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties that support kidney and liver function. The flavonoids kaempferol and quercetin provide cellular protection through free radical scavenging activity. In Traditional Chinese Medicine, this herb works by nourishing kidney and liver yin, tonifying yang essence, and improving vision through its effects on the liver-kidney axis (Evidence Level B, Traditional use).

Question 2

Does Astragalus complanatus interact with any medications?

Accepted Answer

Limited research exists on specific drug interactions for Astragalus complanatus. Due to its traditional use as a kidney tonic and potential diuretic properties, it may interact with diuretic medications, affecting fluid and electrolyte balance. The presence of flavonoids like quercetin may affect the metabolism of certain drugs processed by the liver. Patients taking immunosuppressants, diuretics, or medications metabolized by cytochrome P450 enzymes should consult a healthcare provider before use (Evidence Level D).

Question 3

What is the recommended dosage for Astragalus complanatus?

Accepted Answer

The traditional dosage for Astragalus complanatus seeds is 9-15 grams daily when prepared as a decoction. For standardized extract formulations, 500mg daily is commonly recommended. The seeds are typically decocted by simmering in water for 20-30 minutes to extract the active compounds. Dosage may vary based on individual constitution and condition being treated. It is best to follow the guidance of a qualified herbalist or healthcare provider familiar with Traditional Chinese Medicine formulations (Evidence Level B, Traditional use).

Question 4

Is Astragalus complanatus safe to take during pregnancy?

Accepted Answer

Astragalus complanatus is generally considered safe during pregnancy when used at appropriate doses under professional guidance. Unlike many herbs, it does not have known uterine-stimulating properties and has a long history of traditional use without reported adverse pregnancy outcomes. However, pregnant women should always consult a qualified healthcare provider or licensed herbalist before starting any herbal supplement. Safety during breastfeeding has not been well established, so caution is advised for nursing mothers (Evidence Level D, Traditional use).

Question 6

What are the side effects and contraindications of Astragalus complanatus?

Accepted Answer
