Question 1

How does sandalwood essential oil work on skin?

Accepted Answer

Sandalwood essential oil works primarily through its main active compound alpha-santalol, which comprises 50-90% of the oil. Alpha-santalol demonstrates antimicrobial activity against bacteria and fungi, making it effective for skin infections. It also exhibits anti-inflammatory properties by inhibiting pro-inflammatory mediators. The sesquiterpene compounds in sandalwood penetrate skin tissue easily, providing cooling and soothing effects. Evidence level: C (preclinical studies support these mechanisms).

Question 2

Does sandalwood essential oil interact with any medications?

Accepted Answer

There are no well-documented drug interactions for topical sandalwood essential oil in scientific literature. However, internal use of sandalwood oil may affect how the liver processes certain medications due to its metabolic effects. If you are taking medications metabolized by the liver, consult a healthcare provider before using sandalwood internally. Always inform your healthcare provider about all herbal supplements you use. Evidence level: C.

Question 3

What is the recommended dosage for sandalwood?

Accepted Answer

For topical use, sandalwood essential oil should be diluted to 1-3% concentration in a carrier oil before applying to skin. Traditional Ayurvedic use involves applying sandalwood paste (1-2 grams of powder mixed with water) to the forehead or affected areas. Internal use of essential oil is not recommended due to kidney irritation risks. Always perform a patch test before widespread topical application. Evidence level: Traditional.

Question 4

Is sandalwood safe to use during pregnancy?

Accepted Answer

Sandalwood essential oil is considered unsafe during pregnancy and should be avoided. The essential oil may stimulate uterine contractions and potentially affect fetal development. Pregnant women should not use sandalwood essential oil either topically or internally. Traditional sandalwood paste applications should also be avoided during pregnancy as a precaution. Consult a qualified healthcare provider for safe alternatives. Evidence level: C.

Question 5

What are the benefits of sandalwood for skin care?

Accepted Answer

Sandalwood offers several benefits for skin care based on traditional use and preliminary research. Its antimicrobial properties help treat acne and minor skin infections. The anti-inflammatory action soothes irritated, inflamed, or sunburned skin. Alpha-santalol provides a cooling effect that can reduce skin redness and heat. Sandalwood is also used traditionally in Ayurveda to improve skin complexion and reduce signs of aging. Evidence level: C.

Question 6

What are the side effects of sandalwood essential oil?

Accepted Answer

Topical sandalwood essential oil may cause skin sensitization, allergic reactions, or contact dermatitis in some individuals, particularly with undiluted application. Internal use of sandalwood essential oil can cause kidney irritation and is contraindicated for people with kidney disease. Always dilute the essential oil properly and perform a patch test before use. Discontinue use if redness, itching, or irritation occurs. Evidence level: C.
