Question 1

How does Seseli libanotis work as a digestive remedy?

Accepted Answer

Seseli libanotis contains furocoumarins (isopimpinellin, bergapten) and flavonoids that contribute to its carminative and anti-inflammatory actions. The volatile oils and aromatic compounds stimulate digestive secretions and help relax smooth muscle in the gastrointestinal tract, reducing gas and bloating. The herb's bitter principles may also stimulate bile flow. These combined effects explain its traditional use for digestive complaints. Evidence level: C (preliminary evidence from traditional use and limited pharmacological studies).

Question 2

Does Seseli libanotis interact with any medications?

Accepted Answer

Seseli libanotis contains furocoumarins (isopimpinellin and bergapten), which can potentially interact with medications metabolized by cytochrome P450 enzymes and may affect drug metabolism. The furocoumarins may also increase photosensitivity, which could compound effects when taken with photosensitizing medications. Due to limited clinical research (Evidence level: C), individuals taking prescription medications should consult a healthcare provider before use. Specific drug interaction studies are lacking, so caution is advised.

Question 3

What is the recommended dosage for Seseli libanotis tea?

Accepted Answer

The traditional adult dosage for Seseli libanotis is 2-4 grams of dried herb prepared as a tea infusion. To prepare, steep the dried herb in hot water for 10-15 minutes before straining. This dosage is based on traditional European folk medicine use rather than clinical trials (Evidence level: C). Dosage for children has not been established. Always start with the lower end of the dosage range to assess individual tolerance.

Question 4

Is Seseli libanotis safe during pregnancy?

Accepted Answer

Seseli libanotis is considered unsafe during pregnancy and should be avoided. The herb contains furocoumarins (isopimpinellin, bergapten) which may have uterine-stimulating properties and pose risks to fetal development. There is insufficient safety data for breastfeeding, so avoidance is recommended. Women who are pregnant, planning pregnancy, or breastfeeding should not use this herb. Evidence level: C based on constituent analysis and traditional contraindications.

Question 5

What is Seseli libanotis used for in herbal medicine?

Accepted Answer

Seseli libanotis is traditionally used in European folk medicine primarily for digestive complaints, including indigestion, gas, and bloating. As a carminative herb, it helps relieve flatulence and gastrointestinal discomfort. The herb also has anti-inflammatory properties and is used as an aromatic. It has been employed as a digestive tonic and flavoring agent. Evidence level: C indicates limited clinical evidence, with use primarily based on traditional knowledge and preliminary pharmacological research.

Question 6

What are the side effects of Seseli libanotis?

Accepted Answer

The primary side effect associated with Seseli libanotis is photosensitivity due to its furocoumarin content (isopimpinellin and bergapten). Exposure to sunlight or UV light after consumption may cause skin reactions, including redness, rash, or increased sun sensitivity. Individuals with known photosensitivity disorders or those taking photosensitizing medications should avoid this herb. Other potential side effects have not been well-documented due to limited clinical research (Evidence level: C).
