Summary
Ziziphus mauritiana, commonly known as Indian jujube or Ber, is a fruit-bearing tree native to South Asia with recognized therapeutic value [PMID:37609543, PMID:32633009].
Background
Ziziphus mauritiana (Rhamnaceae) is a tree endemic to South Asia, including India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Sri Lanka, and is also found in tropical and subtropical regions of Africa and South America [PMID:37609543, PMID:37765379]. It produces a small, round or oblong drupe fruit [PMID:37609543].
Traditional uses
The plant is used for its therapeutic value, with various components including fruit, seed, leaves, roots, and flowers being utilized [PMID:37609543].
Active compounds
Active phytochemical constituents include berberine, quercetin, kaempferol, sitosterol, stigmasterol, lanosterol, and diosgenin [PMID:32633009]. The peel contains high levels of phenolics and flavonoids, specifically O-[(2-hexosyl)-6-rhamnosyl]-hexoside, quercetin-3-O-pentosylhexoside, and quercetin-3-O-(2-pentosyl-rhamnoside)-4'-O-rhamnoside [PMID:37215918].
Mechanism of action
Bioactive substances in the plant demonstrate potential for antioxidant activity [PMID:37609543, PMID:37215918].
Clinical evidence
Evidence CGeneral Pharmacological Potential
Extracts from fruits, leaves, and stems have demonstrated antioxidant, cytotoxic, antimicrobial, anti-diarrhoeal, antidepressant, immunomodulator, and hepatoprotective effects [PMID:32633009].
Evidence CMetabolic/Infectious Effects
Components of the tree demonstrate potential for antibacterial and antidiabetic effects [PMID:37609543].
Evidence CCancer
Bioactive substances in the tree demonstrate potential for anticancer activity [PMID:37609543].
Safety & adverse effects
A case of anaphylaxis (scalp pruritus, dyspnea, and generalized urticaria) has been reported following the ingestion of Indian jujube in a patient without a history of latex allergy [PMID:32565843]. Some reports implicate the fruit in latex-fruit syndrome [PMID:32565843].
Evidence summary
The evidence consists primarily of comprehensive reviews and a single case report; clinical efficacy is suggested through pharmacological reviews rather than randomized controlled trials.
