Question 1

How does Alnus rubra work as an astringent?

Accepted Answer

Alnus rubra (red alder) bark contains significant levels of tannins, which are polyphenolic compounds that bind to and precipitate proteins. This astringent action tightens tissues, reduces secretions, and creates a protective barrier on wounds or mucous membranes. The tannins cross-link with skin proteins, helping reduce inflammation and promote healing of minor wounds, abrasions, and skin irritations. Evidence level: C (preliminary research and traditional use support this mechanism).

Question 2

Does red alder bark interact with any medications?

Accepted Answer

Alnus rubra bark contains high tannin content, which may interfere with the absorption of certain medications, particularly alkaloids and iron supplements. Tannins can bind to drugs in the digestive tract, potentially reducing their effectiveness. Patients taking prescription medications should separate consumption by at least 2-3 hours. No specific drug interaction studies exist for red alder (Evidence level: D), so patients on multiple medications should consult a healthcare provider before use.

Question 3

What is the recommended dosage for Alnus rubra bark tea?

Accepted Answer

The traditional adult dosage for Alnus rubra dried bark is 2-3 grams prepared as a tea or decoction. To prepare, steep the dried bark in boiling water for 10-15 minutes. This dosage is based on traditional use by Pacific Northwest Native American communities and ethnobotanical records (Evidence level: C). Due to the high tannin content, use should be limited to short-term applications. Always start with the lowest effective dose and consult a qualified herbalist for personalized guidance.

Question 4

Is Alnus rubra safe to use during pregnancy?

Accepted Answer

No, Alnus rubra is considered unsafe during pregnancy. The bark contains significant tannin levels and has traditional use as a blood purifier, which may stimulate uterine activity or affect fetal development. Additionally, the astringent properties could cause constipation and reduce nutrient absorption. Pregnant women should avoid red alder preparations entirely. Women who are breastfeeding should also exercise caution and consult a healthcare provider before use. Evidence level: C based on traditional contraindications and pharmacological principles.

Question 5

What are the medicinal uses of red alder bark?

Accepted Answer

Alnus rubra bark has been traditionally used by Pacific Northwest Native American peoples as an astringent, anti-inflammatory, and blood purifier. Primary applications include wound healing, treating skin conditions, and addressing inflammatory conditions. The bark may be applied topically as a poultice for wounds or taken internally as a tea. Modern research has identified active compounds including tannins, betulin, lupeol, and flavonoids that support these traditional uses. Evidence level: C indicates preliminary research with limited clinical validation.

Question 6

What are the side effects of taking red alder bark?

Accepted Answer

The primary side effect associated with Alnus rubra bark is constipation, which occurs due to the high tannin content. Tannins can reduce intestinal motility and cause digestive discomfort when consumed in excess. Other potential effects include nausea or stomach upset in sensitive individuals. Long-term use of high-tannin herbs may interfere with iron absorption and other mineral uptake. To minimize side effects, limit use to short durations and stay within recommended dosages. Evidence level: C.
