Question 1

How does Artemisia cina work to kill intestinal roundworms?

Accepted Answer

Artemisia cina works primarily through its active compound santonin, which acts as an anthelmintic by paralyzing intestinal roundworms. The paralyzed worms lose their grip on the intestinal wall and are expelled through normal bowel movements, often with the aid of a laxative. The exact molecular mechanism remains incompletely understood, but santonin appears to affect the nervous system of the parasites. Evidence Level: C (historical and preclinical data).

Question 2

Is Artemisia cina safe to take during pregnancy?

Accepted Answer

No, Artemisia cina is contraindicated during pregnancy and should be strictly avoided. Santonin, the primary active compound, can stimulate uterine contractions and poses significant risks to fetal development. Traditional and historical evidence consistently documents its unsafety for pregnant women. Additionally, the potential for toxicity, including convulsions at higher doses, presents unacceptable risks during pregnancy. Women who are pregnant, planning pregnancy, or breastfeeding must avoid all santonin-containing preparations. Evidence Level: C.

Question 3

What is the correct dosage for Artemisia cina preparations?

Accepted Answer

Artemisia cina should only be used in pharmaceutical santonin preparations under qualified medical supervision. Raw herb dosing is not recommended due to the narrow therapeutic margin between effective and toxic doses. Historical pharmaceutical preparations provided standardized santonin amounts administered as single doses, typically followed by a laxative to expel paralyzed worms. Self-medication with raw Artemisia cina is strongly discouraged due to toxicity risks. Evidence Level: C. Consult a qualified practitioner for appropriate guidance.

Question 4

Does Artemisia cina interact with any medications?

Accepted Answer

Limited modern research exists on Artemisia cina drug interactions. Santonin-containing preparations may interact with other anthelmintic medications, potentially increasing toxicity. Because santonin is metabolized through the liver, concurrent use with medications affecting hepatic function should be approached cautiously. Patients taking anticonvulsants should avoid santonin due to the risk of convulsions at higher doses. Always consult a qualified healthcare provider before combining with other treatments. Evidence Level: C.

Question 5

What are the side effects of santonin from Artemisia cina?

Accepted Answer

Santonin from Artemisia cina produces several characteristic side effects. The most distinctive is xanthopsia, a visual disturbance where objects appear yellow-tinted. Other common effects include nausea, vomiting, headache, and abdominal discomfort. At toxic doses, santonin can cause dizziness, convulsions, and potentially respiratory depression. Children are particularly susceptible to santonin toxicity. The narrow margin between therapeutic and toxic doses makes proper dosing essential. Evidence Level: C (historical clinical reports).

Question 6

What is Artemisia cina used for traditionally?

Accepted Answer

Artemisia cina has been traditionally used as an anthelmintic, specifically for treating intestinal roundworm infections (ascariasis). The herb was historically the primary commercial source of santonin, a compound that paralyzes and expels roundworms from the digestive tract. Secondary traditional uses include treating various digestive disorders. Modern clinical use has declined significantly due to the development of safer anthelmintic medications and documented toxicity concerns associated with santonin. Evidence Level: C (Traditional/Historical).
