Atractylodes Rhizome (Atractylodes macrocephala): Benefits, Dosage, Safety & Evidence

Questions fréquentes

How does Atractylodes macrocephala work in the body?

Atractylodes macrocephala exerts its effects through active compounds including atractylone, beta-eudesmol, atractylodin, and polysaccharides. These constituents support digestive function by enhancing gastrointestinal motility and nutrient absorption. The polysaccharides demonstrate immunomodulatory properties, while volatile oils contribute anti-inflammatory activity. In traditional Chinese medicine terms, it strengthens spleen qi and dries dampness, making it a foundational herb for digestive and immune support. Evidence level: C.

Does Atractylodes macrocephala interact with any medications?

Currently, there are no well-documented drug interactions for Atractylodes macrocephala in medical literature. However, due to its immunomodulatory polysaccharides and effects on gastrointestinal motility, theoretical interactions with immunosuppressant medications or drugs affecting digestion may exist. Patients taking prescription medications should consult a qualified healthcare provider before adding this herb to their regimen. Evidence level: C.

What is the recommended dosage for Atractylodes macrocephala?

The standard adult dosage for Atractylodes macrocephala is 6-12 grams of dried rhizome daily, or 500-1000mg of standardized extract. In traditional Chinese medicine practice, it is typically decocted as a tea or combined with other herbs in formulated prescriptions. Dosage may vary based on individual constitution and the specific condition being addressed. Consult a qualified practitioner for personalized recommendations. Evidence level: Traditional.

Is Atractylodes macrocephala safe during pregnancy?

Yes, Atractylodes macrocephala is considered safe during pregnancy and is specifically indicated for preventing miscarriage and calming the fetus in traditional Chinese medicine. It strengthens spleen qi to help stabilize pregnancy, particularly in cases of threatened miscarriage accompanied by lower back pain or mild spotting. However, pregnant women should use this herb only under the guidance of a qualified TCM practitioner. Evidence level: Traditional.

What are the side effects of Atractylodes macrocephala?

Atractylodes macrocephala is generally well-tolerated. The most common side effect is gastrointestinal dryness, particularly with prolonged use or excessive dosing, due to its dampness-drying properties. Rare allergic reactions have been reported. In traditional Chinese medicine, it is contraindicated in cases of yin deficiency with fire, or conditions of excess heat. Discontinue use if dry mouth, constipation, or discomfort occurs. Evidence level: C.

Résumé

Atractylodes macrocephala is a traditional Chinese medicinal herb used primarily for gastrointestinal disorders and inflammatory diseases [PMID:40490795, 41617265]. It is recognized for its anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and immunomodulatory activities [PMID:42313997].

Contexte

Atractylodes macrocephala is a perennial herbaceous plant of the Asteraceae family native to China [PMID:30722298]. Its biennial root, known as Largehead Atractylodes Rhizome (LAR) or Baizhu, is a common Chinese materia medica [PMID:30722298, 38797027].

Usages traditionnels

Traditionally used to strengthen the spleen, benefit qi, dry dampness, promote water circulation, and prevent miscarriage [PMID:35760256]. It is clinically used to treat reduced digestive function, abdominal distension, and diarrhea caused by spleen deficiency [PMID:38797027], and is used to prevent early pregnancy loss due to miscarriage [PMID:30722298].

Composés actifs

Key compounds include polysaccharides (composed of glucose, galactose, rhamnose, arabinose, mannose, galacturonic acid, and xylose) [PMID:36091757], sesquiterpenes such as atractylenolide III [PMID:36948639], volatile oils [PMID:36091757], and acetylenes [PMID:17269075].

Mécanisme d'action

The herb acts by modulating the gut microbiota and tryptophan metabolism to protect the gut barrier and exert anti-inflammatory effects, often associated with the Th17 cell differentiation signaling pathway [PMID:40490795, 39667762]. Specific compounds inhibit the production of nitric oxide (NO) and prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) by suppressing iNOS and COX-2 protein/mRNA levels and inhibiting NF-κB transcriptional activity [PMID:31091823]. Polysaccharides may also regulate the SIRT1/Nlrp3/caspase-1 pathway [PMID:40446979] and the PI3K/Akt signaling pathway [PMID:41475736].

Synthèse des preuves

Evidence is primarily based on preclinical animal models (D) and traditional use (C), with one meta-analysis (A) regarding its use in a complex formula for chronic gastritis. Most findings focus on the modulatory effects of polysaccharides on the gut-brain and gut-liver axes.
