Bai Bian Dou Seed (Dolichos lablab): Benefits, Dosage, Safety & Evidence

Questions fréquentes

How does Bai Bian Dou seed work to strengthen the spleen?

Bai Bian Dou (Dolichos lablab) seed contains active compounds including phaseolins, lectins, phytohaemagglutinin, tannins, and polysaccharides. In Traditional Chinese Medicine, it strengthens the Spleen by providing gentle warming energy that addresses deficient cold patterns. The herb resolves dampness through its aromatic properties, helping the digestive system transform and transport fluids properly. This dual action makes it effective for summer damp conditions where heat and humidity combine to cause digestive upset. Evidence level: C (traditional use and preliminary research).

Does Bai Bian Dou interact with any medications?

There are currently no well-documented drug interactions for Bai Bian Dou seed in clinical literature. As a gentle food-medicine with a long history of safe consumption, significant interactions appear unlikely. However, the presence of lectins and phytohaemagglutinin means the herb could theoretically affect immune function. Individuals taking immunosuppressant medications should consult a qualified healthcare practitioner before use. Always inform your healthcare provider about all herbal supplements you are taking. Evidence level: C.

What is the correct dosage for Bai Bian Dou seed?

The standard adult dosage for dried Bai Bian Dou seed is 9-15 grams per day according to Traditional Chinese Medicine texts. As a food-medicine, it can be cooked and consumed in larger quantities as part of soups, congees, or stews. For medicinal decoctions, the seeds are typically cooked thoroughly before consumption. Always consult a qualified herbalist for personalized dosing recommendations based on your specific condition and constitution. Evidence level: C (traditional use).

Is Bai Bian Dou safe to take during pregnancy?

Bai Bian Dou seed is generally considered safe during pregnancy in Traditional Chinese Medicine practice. Classified as a food-medicine, it has a long history of dietary use without significant safety concerns. Its gentle, nourishing properties make it suitable for pregnant individuals experiencing digestive weakness or damp-related symptoms. However, pregnant women should always consult a qualified healthcare provider or TCM practitioner before using any herbal medicine to ensure it is appropriate for their specific situation.

What conditions does Bai Bian Dou treat?

Bai Bian Dou seed is primarily used to strengthen the Spleen and resolve summer dampness in Traditional Chinese Medicine. It treats summer heat conditions with dampness, vomiting and diarrhea caused by damp accumulation, and general digestive weakness with deficient cold patterns. As a gentle tonic food-medicine, it provides nourishment while addressing dampness that can impair digestion. It is particularly valued for conditions arising during hot, humid weather when dampness tends to accumulate in the body. Evidence level: C.

Are there any side effects or contraindications for Bai Bian Dou?

Bai Bian Dou seed is generally very safe with minimal reported side effects. The main contraindication is in conditions of excess damp, where its warming and Spleen-strengthening properties may potentially aggravate the condition. Raw or undercooked seeds should be avoided due to lectin content that can cause digestive irritation. Thorough cooking neutralizes these compounds. As with any herb, individuals with specific health conditions should consult a qualified practitioner before use. Evidence level: Traditional use.

Résumé

Bai Bian Dou (Dolichos lablab) is a nutrient-dense legume used in traditional Chinese medicine and as a food source, demonstrating potential anti-inflammatory, anti-diabetic, and anti-obesity activities [PMID:39102757, 38961686, 30177649].

Contexte

Dolichos lablab (also known as hyacinth bean or Lablab purpureus) is a drought-tolerant, nitrogen-fixing legume originating from the Indian subcontinent [PMID:32530295, 35979429, 42323134]. It is utilized across Asia and Africa for human food, fodder, and medicinal purposes [PMID:22435478, 42323134].

Usages traditionnels

In traditional Chinese medicine, the mature seeds are used for medicinal treatment and dietary consumption [PMID:39102757]. Specifically, raw seeds are used for dampness resolution, while dry-fried seeds are used to enhance spleen-strengthening and anti-diarrheal effects [PMID:41270913]. It is also traditionally used for gastrointestinal disorders [PMID:37895821].

Composés actifs

The seeds are rich in triterpenoid saponins (including dolilabsaponins A-O and chikusetsusaponin IVa) [PMID:39102757, 30177649], aromatic compounds (including dolilabphenosides A-C2) [PMID:37778669], and phenolics such as phenolic acids and flavonoids [PMID:42323134]. Other components include proteins, dietary fibers (pectin-glucuronoxylan complexes), and metabolites like glycitin and procyanidin B2 [PMID:36241256, 40509468, 42323134].

Mécanisme d'action

Anti-inflammatory effects are mediated through the inhibition of nitric oxide (NO) production in RAW264.7 macrophages and the inhibition of inflammatory cytokine IL-1β secretion [PMID:39102757, 37778669]. Anti-ulcerative colitis effects are associated with the inhibition of the PI3K/AKT pathway [PMID:41270913]. Anti-obesity effects involve the inhibition of adipocyte differentiation by affecting mRNA transcriptions of C/EBPα, PPARγ, FAS, and FABP4 [PMID:30177649]. Anti-diabetic effects are linked to the microbiota-gut-brain axis, restoration of the intestinal barrier (up-regulation of Zonula occluden-1), and elevation of glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) [PMID:37813213, 39393741].
