Phyllanthus niruri, known as Bhumi Niruri, is a hepatoprotective herb used in Ayurveda for liver disorders. Its active compounds, including phyllanthin, hypophyllanthin, geraniin, and corilagin, demonstrate antiviral activity against hepatitis B virus by inhibiting surface antigen secretion and protecting hepatocytes from oxidative damage.
Geraniin and corilagin inhibit hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) secretion by interfering with viral envelope assembly and secretion pathways. Phyllanthin and hypophyllanthin enhance antioxidant enzyme activity (e.g., superoxide dismutase, catalase) and reduce lipid peroxidation in hepatocytes. The herb also modulates immune responses by increasing natural killer cell activity and reducing pro-inflammatory cytokines such as TNF-α and IL-6.
