Question 1

How does breadfruit leaf lower blood pressure?

Accepted Answer

Breadfruit leaf contains flavonoids and phenolic compounds that act as natural vasodilators, helping to relax blood vessels and improve circulation. The compounds cycloartenol and lupeol contribute additional antihypertensive effects by reducing oxidative stress and inflammation in arterial walls. Traditional Polynesian and Caribbean medicine has used breadfruit leaf tea for centuries to manage high blood pressure. Evidence level: C (preliminary research and traditional use support these mechanisms, though more clinical trials are needed).

Question 2

Can breadfruit leaf interact with diabetes or blood pressure medications?

Accepted Answer

Yes, breadfruit leaf can cause significant interactions with both antihypertensive and antidiabetic medications. When combined with blood pressure medications, it may cause excessive hypotension, leading to dizziness or fainting. When taken alongside diabetes medications like metformin or insulin, breadfruit leaf can potentiate hypoglycemic effects, potentially causing dangerously low blood sugar levels. Patients on these medications should avoid breadfruit leaf or use it only under qualified medical supervision. Evidence level: C.

Question 3

What is the correct dosage for breadfruit leaf tea?

Accepted Answer

The traditional adult dosage for breadfruit leaf tea is 3-5 dried leaves steeped in hot water, consumed twice daily. To prepare, rinse dried leaves thoroughly and steep in boiling water for 10-15 minutes before straining. Fresh leaves may also be used but require proper washing and drying. This preparation is traditionally used for managing hypertension and blood sugar levels. Evidence level: C (based on traditional use). Always consult a healthcare provider before beginning any herbal regimen.

Question 4

Is breadfruit leaf safe to take during pregnancy?

Accepted Answer

No, breadfruit leaf is considered unsafe during pregnancy and breastfeeding. The herb's blood pressure-lowering and blood sugar-lowering properties may pose risks to both maternal health and fetal development. Traditional Polynesian medicine explicitly contraindicates its use in pregnant women. Additionally, certain compounds in breadfruit leaf may stimulate uterine contractions, potentially increasing the risk of miscarriage or premature labor. Pregnant and breastfeeding women should avoid all breadfruit leaf preparations. Evidence level: C (traditional contraindication).

Question 5

What are the traditional medicinal uses of breadfruit leaf?

Accepted Answer

Breadfruit leaf has been used in traditional Polynesian and Caribbean medicine primarily for treating hypertension and type 2 diabetes. Additional traditional applications include supporting liver health, treating skin infections topically, and serving as a general antihypertensive remedy. The leaves contain bioactive compounds including flavonoids, phenolic compounds, cycloartenol, and lupeol, which contribute to these therapeutic properties. Evidence level: C (supported by traditional use and preliminary phytochemical research, but clinical trials remain limited).
