Butea Superba Root (Butea superba): Benefits, Dosage, Safety & Evidence

Questions fréquentes

How does Butea superba work to improve male vitality?

Butea superba contains phytoandrogens and specific flavonoids that structurally resemble human sex hormones. These compounds are believed to bind to androgen receptors, potentially modulating testosterone activity and supporting male reproductive health. While traditional use is well-documented, current clinical evidence (Level C) suggests the mechanism involves mimicking androgen effects rather than directly boosting testosterone synthesis, helping to explain its reputation as a male tonic.

Can I take Butea superba with testosterone replacement therapy?

You should avoid taking Butea superba if you are on testosterone replacement therapy (TRT) or other hormonal medications. Because the herb contains phytoandrogens that interact with androgen receptors, it may interfere with the efficacy of your medication or cause hormonal imbalances. Combining multiple agents that affect the endocrine system increases the risk of adverse effects without medical supervision.

What is the safe dosage for Butea superba extract?

The standard recommended dosage for Butea superba is 100-200 mg of a standardized extract daily. This range is based on traditional Thai usage and available commercial preparations. It is advisable to start with the lower end of the range to assess tolerance. Exceeding this dosage is not recommended due to the risk of hormonal side effects. Clinical evidence establishing a precise therapeutic dose is limited (Evidence Level C).

Is Butea superba safe for women or during pregnancy?

Butea superba is considered unsafe for women, particularly during pregnancy and breastfeeding. Due to its potent phytoandrogen content, the herb is traditionally indicated for men and may cause hormonal disruption in women. Use during pregnancy poses risks to fetal development. Women who are pregnant, nursing, or trying to conceive should strictly avoid this supplement.

Does Butea superba cause side effects like acne or mood swings?

Yes, side effects can occur, particularly at high doses. Because Butea superba influences androgen activity, users may experience symptoms associated with hormonal fluctuations, such as acne, oily skin, or mood swings. Other reported side effects include gastrointestinal discomfort. Individuals with hormone-sensitive conditions or prostate issues should avoid this herb, as it may exacerbate these conditions.

Résumé

Butea superba is a traditional Thai rejuvenating herb used primarily to improve male sexual performance and treat erectile dysfunction [PMID:23086155, PMID:34671404].

Contexte

Butea superba (Red Kwao Khruea) is a member of the Leguminosae family characterized by tuberous roots [PMID:23086155]. It is often distinguished from other 'Kwao Khruea' species, such as Pueraria candollei, through molecular and chemical analysis [PMID:23086155, PMID:33020994].

Usages traditionnels

Used in traditional Thai medicine as a rejuvenating herb for males to improve physical and mental conditions and prevent impaired sexual performance [PMID:23086155, PMID:25152298].

Composés actifs

The roots contain flavonoids, including isoflavonoids such as formononetin, prunetin, daidzein, genistein, and biochanin A [PMID:33020994, PMID:16973318, PMID:27125688]. Other isolated constituents include superbanone (a 2-aryl-3-benzofuranone), pterocarpans, and benzoins [PMID:28374446].

Mécanisme d'action

Butea superba exhibits androgenic and anti-estrogen effects [PMID:33020994, PMID:24660477]. It has been shown to increase intracavernous pressure (ICP) and enhance the effects of cGMP and IBMX on cavernous smooth muscle relaxation [PMID:16619349]. Additionally, it inhibits acetylcholinesterase (AChE) activity in the cerebral cortex and hippocampus and acts as an Ngn2 promoter activator [PMID:34671404, PMID:23903453].

Preuves cliniques

Preuve BErectile Dysfunction

A 3-month randomized double-blind trial showed significant upgrading in 4 of 5 IIEF-5 descriptive evaluations, with 82.4% of patients exhibiting noticeable improvement [PMID:12937809]. However, another open-label study found positive responses that could not be repeated in a subsequent double-blind phase [PMID:19624593].

Preuve DCognitive and Memory Impairment

In aged male rats, ethanolic extract (50-200 mg/kg) ameliorated scopolamine-induced cognitive impairment in Y-maze, novel object recognition, and passive avoidance tests [PMID:34671404].

Preuve DDepression-like behavior

Administration of Butea superba (300 mg/kg) in mice exposed to chronic mild stress showed antidepressant-like activity [PMID:25152298].

Sécurité et effets indésirables

High doses in rats (1,000 mg/kg/day) induced the formation of micronuclei in polychromatic erythrocytes [PMID:12971499]. In male rats, doses of 150-200 mg/kg BW/day led to increased spleen relative weight, increased serum ALP and AST, and altered neutrophil and eosinophil levels [PMID:18554827]. It has also been associated with hyperandrogenemia [PMID:22629537].

Synthèse des preuves

Evidence is primarily based on animal models (rats/mice) and in vitro studies, with limited and conflicting human clinical trial data regarding erectile dysfunction.
