Question 1

How does Centella erecta work for wound healing?

Accepted Answer

Centella erecta promotes wound healing through its active triterpenoid compounds, particularly asiaticoside and madecassoside. These compounds stimulate collagen synthesis and fibroblast proliferation, accelerating tissue regeneration and repair. The herb also contains betulinic acid and ursolic acid, which provide anti-inflammatory effects that support the healing process. Evidence level C indicates promising but limited clinical data. These mechanisms mirror those of the closely related gotu kola (Centella asiatica), supporting its traditional use in African and Asian folk medicine for treating wounds and skin conditions.

Question 2

Does Centella erecta interact with medications?

Accepted Answer

Centella erecta may interact with hepatotoxic medications, as the herb carries a rare risk of liver toxicity. Combining it with drugs that stress the liver, such as acetaminophen, statins, or certain antibiotics, could potentially increase hepatotoxicity risk. Limited formal drug interaction studies exist (Evidence level C). Patients taking sedatives or anticoagulants should exercise caution, as Centella species may enhance these effects. Always consult a healthcare provider before combining Centella erecta with prescription medications, especially those metabolized by the liver.

Question 3

What is the recommended dosage for Centella erecta?

Accepted Answer

The typical adult dosage for Centella erecta is 2-4 grams of dried herb daily, prepared as a tea or applied topically as a poultice for wound healing. For cognitive support, the same amount can be steeped as an infusion. Evidence level C supports these traditional recommendations derived from folk medicine practices. Standardized extracts containing measured asiaticoside content may offer more consistent dosing. Start with lower doses to assess individual tolerance, and consult a qualified herbalist or healthcare provider for personalized guidance.

Question 4

Is Centella erecta safe during pregnancy?

Accepted Answer

Centella erecta is considered unsafe during pregnancy and should be avoided. Traditional use data and preliminary research suggest potential uterine effects, though comprehensive human safety studies are lacking. The herb's active compounds, including asiaticoside, may pose risks to fetal development. Breastfeeding women should also avoid Centella erecta due to insufficient safety data. Women of childbearing age should use reliable contraception if taking this herb. Always consult a qualified healthcare provider before using any herbal supplements during pregnancy or while breastfeeding.

Question 5

What are the side effects of Centella erecta?

Accepted Answer

Centella erecta may cause rare hepatotoxicity (liver damage), particularly with prolonged use or high doses. Headaches have been reported at elevated dosages. Individuals with pre-existing liver disease should avoid this herb entirely due to contraindications. Other potential side effects include mild gastrointestinal upset and occasional skin irritation with topical application. Evidence level C reflects limited safety data from controlled studies. Discontinue use immediately if experiencing jaundice, abdominal pain, dark urine, or unusual fatigue, and seek prompt medical attention.
