Cistanche Herb (Cistanche tubulosa): Benefits, Dosage, Safety & Evidence

Questions fréquentes

How does Cistanche tubulosa work in the body?

Cistanche tubulosa contains phenylethanoid glycosides, primarily echinacoside and acteoside, which exert antioxidant and neuroprotective effects. These compounds modulate neurotransmitter systems, enhance mitochondrial function, and may support testosterone production through kidney yang tonic activity in Traditional Chinese Medicine theory. Research suggests echinacoside promotes synaptic plasticity and cognitive function, while the herb's traditional use focuses on warming kidney yang to improve reproductive and sexual health. Evidence Level: C.

Does Cistanche tubulosa interact with any medications?

Cistanche tubulosa may interact with hormone-sensitive medications due to its potential effects on testosterone and estrogen pathways. Individuals taking hormone replacement therapy, birth control pills, or medications for hormone-sensitive conditions should exercise caution. The herb may also enhance the effects of laxatives due to its moistening properties. Limited clinical interaction data exists (Evidence Level: C), so consult a healthcare provider before combining with prescription medications, particularly hormonal treatments.

What is the recommended dosage for Cistanche tubulosa?

The standard adult dosage for Cistanche tubulosa is 6-9 grams as a decoction or 300-500mg of standardized extract taken twice daily. For traditional kidney yang tonic preparations, the raw herb is typically simmered in water for 20-30 minutes. Standardized extracts should contain verified levels of echinacoside, typically 10-30%. Dosage may vary based on formulation and intended use. Always follow product label instructions or consult a qualified herbalist. Evidence Level: Traditional/C.

Is Cistanche tubulosa safe during pregnancy and breastfeeding?

Cistanche tubulosa is considered unsafe during pregnancy and should be avoided. As a kidney yang tonic with potential hormonal effects, it may stimulate uterine contractions or affect fetal development. There is insufficient safety data for breastfeeding, so avoidance is recommended. Women with hormone-sensitive conditions such as breast cancer, endometriosis, or uterine fibroids should use caution due to potential estrogenic activity. Evidence Level: C/Traditional. Consult a healthcare provider before use.

Can Cistanche tubulosa help with erectile dysfunction?

Cistanche tubulosa has been used traditionally as a kidney yang tonic to support male sexual function and address erectile concerns. Preliminary research suggests potential benefits for testosterone levels and reproductive health, though clinical evidence remains limited (Evidence Level: C). The herb's active compounds may support vascular health and hormonal balance. While traditional use supports its role in male vitality, individuals with persistent erectile dysfunction should consult a healthcare provider to rule out underlying conditions.

Résumé

Cistanche tubulosa (Rou Cong Rong) is a parasitic desert plant used as a tonic in traditional medicine, demonstrating potential anti-aging, neuroprotective, and reproductive benefits [PMID:29344414, PMID:26973528].

Contexte

Cistanche tubulosa is an endangered perennial parasitic plant that grows on the roots of sand-fixing plants in arid or semi-arid regions, primarily in northwestern China [PMID:29344414, PMID:31257323, PMID:26973528]. It is recognized in both the Chinese and Japanese Pharmacopoeias [PMID:32741910, PMID:31257323].

Usages traditionnels

Traditionally used as a tonic for kidney deficiency, impotence, female infertility, sterility, lumbago, body weakness, senile constipation, morbid leucorrhea, and profuse metrorrhagia [PMID:26973528, PMID:31257323, PMID:18691718].

Composés actifs

The primary bioactive compounds are phenylethanoid glycosides (PhGs), including acteoside and echinacoside [PMID:32741910, PMID:27703431, PMID:39837891]. Other constituents include polysaccharides, iridoids, lignans, volatile oils, alditols, and oligosaccharides [PMID:26973528, PMID:18691718].

Mécanisme d'action

Mechanisms include anti-oxidation, scavenging free radicals, anti-lipid peroxidation, and modulation of the AKT/CASP3 pathway via m6A methylation [PMID:27703431, PMID:40641367]. It may also act by modulating the HIF-1α/LDHA axis to promote glial scar repair [PMID:40769434] and regulating gut microbiota and fatty acid metabolism to improve cognitive function [PMID:40860878].

Preuves cliniques
