Question 1

How does Combretum zeyheri work against intestinal worms?

Accepted Answer

Combretum zeyheri exhibits anthelmintic activity primarily through combretastatins and other bioactive compounds that may paralyze and expel intestinal parasites. The tannins and flavonoids contribute additional antimicrobial effects by disrupting microbial cell membranes. Laboratory studies suggest these compounds interfere with parasite metabolism and motility. Evidence level: C (preclinical studies). Traditional use spans generations among southern African healers for treating worm infestations.

Question 2

Does Combretum zeyheri interact with any medications?

Accepted Answer

No specific drug interaction studies exist for Combretum zeyheri (Evidence level: D). However, caution is advised when taking it alongside antiparasitic medications, as effects may be additive. The tannin content may interfere with iron absorption and certain medications that bind to tannins. Patients taking prescription medications should consult a healthcare provider before use, as potential interactions remain understudied.

Question 3

What is the recommended dosage of Combretum zeyheri bark?

Accepted Answer

Traditional preparations use a bark decoction of approximately 200ml taken twice daily for adults (Evidence level: Traditional). This typically involves boiling dried bark in water for 15-20 minutes. Dosage for children under 6 is contraindicated. Standardized commercial extracts are not widely available, so traditional preparation methods remain common. Start with lower doses to assess individual tolerance.

Question 4

Is Combretum zeyheri safe during pregnancy?

Accepted Answer

Combretum zeyheri is considered unsafe during pregnancy and should be avoided (Evidence level: D, based on traditional knowledge). The plant contains bioactive compounds including combretastatins that may stimulate uterine contractions or affect fetal development. Traditional healers historically avoided this herb in pregnant women. Women who are breastfeeding should also exercise caution, as safety data is lacking. Consult a qualified healthcare provider for pregnancy-safe alternatives.

Question 5

What is Combretum zeyheri used for in traditional medicine?

Accepted Answer

Combretum zeyheri is traditionally used in southern African medicine for treating pneumonia, sexually transmitted infections, and intestinal worms (Evidence level: C). The bark is the primary plant part used, prepared as a decoction. Additional traditional applications include wound healing due to antimicrobial properties. The plant contains combretastatins, tannins, flavonoids, and terpenoids that contribute to its medicinal effects. Clinical research on efficacy remains limited.
