Convolvulus scammonia is a climbing plant native to the Middle East and Anatolia, historically used as a potent cathartic. Its primary active compounds are resin glycosides (scammonin, scammonic acid) which act as strong purgatives. Due to its severe side effects, it is not recommended for modern use.
The resin glycosides (scammonin) are poorly absorbed and act as irritant purgatives by stimulating intestinal peristalsis and increasing fluid secretion into the colon. They may activate enteric neurons and prostaglandin pathways, leading to intense watery evacuation. The drastic purgation can cause significant electrolyte loss and dehydration.
