Cosmos caudatus
Cosmos caudatus, commonly known as ulam raja, is a tropical annual herb widely consumed as a fresh salad in Southeast Asia for its antioxidant and bone health benefits. It contains flavonoids such as quercetin, rutin, and myricetin, along with chlorogenic acid and ascorbic acid, which contribute to its anti-inflammatory and cardioprotective properties.
The antioxidant activity is primarily due to quercetin and rutin, which scavenge free radicals and upregulate endogenous antioxidant enzymes like superoxide dismutase and catalase. Chlorogenic acid inhibits the NF-κB pathway, reducing pro-inflammatory cytokines. For bone health, quercetin and myricetin stimulate osteoblast differentiation and inhibit osteoclast activity via modulation of the RANKL/OPG pathway. Cardioprotective effects involve vasodilation through nitric oxide production and inhibition of angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) activity.
