Cynodon dactylon (Cynodon dactylon): Benefits, Dosage, Safety & Evidence

Questions fréquentes

How does Cynodon dactylon stop bleeding?

Cynodon dactylon, known as Durva grass, acts as a hemostatic agent primarily through astringent and vasoconstrictive properties. Its active flavonoids and triterpenoids help constrict blood vessels and accelerate blood clotting. In Ayurvedic practice, the fresh juice is applied topically to wounds or consumed to manage internal bleeding disorders like menorrhagia. Evidence Level: C.

Does Cynodon dactylon interact with diabetes medications?

Cynodon dactylon possesses hypoglycemic properties that may enhance the effects of antidiabetic drugs. Because the herb naturally lowers blood glucose, combining it with insulin or oral medications like metformin could theoretically increase the risk of hypoglycemia. Patients managing diabetes should monitor their blood sugar levels closely and consult a healthcare provider before adding this herb to their regimen. Evidence Level: C.

What is the recommended dosage for Cynodon dactylon?

The standard adult dosage for Cynodon dactylon is 20-30 ml of fresh juice or 5-10 grams of dried herb daily. For wound healing, a paste made from the fresh grass is applied externally. Dosage may vary based on the specific condition being treated, so consulting an Ayurvedic practitioner for personalized advice is recommended. Evidence Level: Traditional.

Is Cynodon dactylon safe to use during pregnancy?

Cynodon dactylon is traditionally considered safe during pregnancy and is even used in Ayurveda to support fetal health. However, modern clinical data regarding high-dose supplementation during pregnancy is limited. Pregnant women should stick to food-grade amounts or consult a qualified healthcare provider before using medicinal preparations to ensure safety. Evidence Level: Traditional.

What are the benefits of Cynodon dactylon for diabetes?

Cynodon dactylon is used in traditional medicine to help manage blood sugar levels. Research suggests that its flavonoids and alkaloids may improve insulin sensitivity and inhibit glucose absorption in the intestines. While preliminary studies show antidiabetic potential, human clinical trials are limited. It should be used as a supportive therapy alongside standard medical treatments rather than a replacement. Evidence Level: C.
