Cyperus Articulatus (Cyperus articulatus): Benefits, Dosage, Safety & Evidence

Questions fréquentes

How does Cyperus articulatus work as a sedative?

Cyperus articulatus exerts its sedative effects primarily through its volatile oil content, specifically sesquiterpenes like mustakone and cyperene. While the exact mechanism requires further study (Evidence Level C), these compounds are believed to modulate the central nervous system to promote relaxation and reduce neural excitability. This action supports its traditional use in Amazonian medicine for calming the nerves and treating conditions like anxiety and insomnia. The essential oil is often the primary active fraction used for these therapeutic effects.

Does Cyperus articulatus interact with sedative medications?

Yes, Cyperus articulatus interacts with central nervous system (CNS) depressants. Because the herb possesses significant sedative properties, taking it alongside pharmaceutical sedatives, benzodiazepines, or alcohol can cause additive drowsiness and excessive sedation. This combination may impair cognitive function and motor coordination. It is advised to avoid this herb if you are taking prescription sedatives or operating heavy machinery, as the potentiated effects can be dangerous.

What is the recommended dosage for Cyperus articulatus rhizome?

The standard adult dosage for Cyperus articulatus is 2 to 4 grams of the dried rhizome prepared as a decoction, taken one to three times daily. If using the essential oil, it must be properly diluted in a carrier oil for topical application or used in aromatherapy; internal use of the pure oil should be supervised by a professional. Dosage recommendations are based on traditional use (Evidence Level C) rather than standardized clinical trials.

Is Cyperus articulatus safe during pregnancy?

No, Cyperus articulatus is considered unsafe during pregnancy. Traditional evidence suggests the herb may stimulate uterine contractions or affect menstrual flow, posing a potential risk of miscarriage. Consequently, pregnant individuals should strictly avoid using this herb in any form, including decoctions and essential oils. Safety during breastfeeding has not been established, so avoidance is generally recommended for lactating mothers as a precautionary measure.

What is Cyperus articulatus used for in herbal medicine?

In traditional Amazonian and African medicine, Cyperus articulatus is primarily used as a sedative to treat anxiety, insomnia, and nervous tension. It is also employed for digestive disorders and to relieve headaches. Additionally, the essential oil demonstrates antifungal properties in preliminary research. While these uses are supported by ethnobotanical history (Evidence Level C), robust clinical trials are currently lacking, so it is often used as a complementary approach rather than a primary treatment.

Résumé

Cyperus articulatus, also known as priprioca, is a medicinal plant used in Africa and the Amazon region for treating epilepsy, malaria, and inflammatory conditions [PMID:32302934, 33120980, 39419300].

Contexte

Cyperus articulatus L. is a tropical and subtropical plant of the Cyperaceae family [PMID:32527068]. It is a marshland plant found in regions including Brazil, Cameroon, and Nigeria [PMID:8953423, 32302934, 10861974].

Usages traditionnels

Traditionally used in the Amazon for perfumed baths and homemade perfumes [PMID:39419300], and in traditional medicine to treat diseases related to inflammatory processes [PMID:39419300, 36144672], epilepsy [PMID:32302934, 8953423], and malaria [PMID:33120980]. In North Western Cameroon, it is used to treat onchocerciasis [PMID:24998345], and in Northern Nigeria, it is used for pest control as an insect repellant [PMID:10861974].

Composés actifs

The plant contains flavonoids, saponins, tannins, terpenes, and sugars [PMID:11163936]. Essential oil metabolites include mustakone, eudesma-4(15)-7-dien-1β-ol, caryophyllene oxide [PMID:39194916], longifolenaldehyde, cyperotundone, α-copaene, β-calacorene, α-calacorene, and khusinol [PMID:36373334]. Other identified compounds include sesquiterpenes (e.g., corymbolone, cyclocolorenone, cadalene) [PMID:33120980, 38475535], stilbene dimers (trans-scirpusin B), and stilbene trimers (cyperusphenol B) [PMID:36144672].

Mécanisme d'action

Extracts inhibit the binding of [3H]CGP39653 to the NMDA recognition site and [3H]glycine to the strychnine-insensitive glycine site of the NMDA receptor complex [PMID:8953423]. It acts as an NMDA antagonist, inhibiting NMDA-mediated neurotransmission [PMID:12787951, 8953423]. In inflammatory models, certain constituents inhibit the production of nitric oxide (NO) and the expression of inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) and cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) [PMID:36144672].

Preuves cliniques

Preuve DEpilepsy/Seizures

Methanolic extracts protected mice against maximal electroshock (MES)- and pentylenetetrazol (PTZ)-induced seizures [PMID:11390127]; ethanolic extracts of leaves reduced seizure scores, latency, frequency, and duration in PTZ-induced mice [PMID:29321995].

Preuve DMalaria (Plasmodium falciparum)

Sesquiterpenes corymbolone and mustakone exhibited significant anti-plasmodial properties, with mustakone being approximately ten times more active than corymbolone [PMID:18234452].

Preuve DBacterial/Fungal Infections

Essential oils inhibited the growth of Aspergillus flavus [PMID:39194916] and Candida albicans [PMID:15707770]. Ethanolic extracts of rhizomes showed strong antimicrobial activity against Streptococcus mutans [PMID:38475535].

Preuve DCancer (Hepatocellular Carcinoma)

Rhizome essential oil induced cell cycle arrest in the G2/M phase and cell death in HepG2 cells and inhibited tumor development in a xenograft model [PMID:32527068].

Preuve DOnchocerciasis

Metabolites AMJ1 (mustakone) and linoleic acid killed both microfilariae and adult worms of O. ochengi in a dose-dependent manner [PMID:25089243].

Sécurité et effets indésirables

The total extract of the rhizome does not appear to possess anaesthetic or paralysing effects in mice [PMID:11163936].

Interactions médicamenteuses

When associated with sodium thiopental or diazepam, the total extract facilitates sleep induction and increases total sleep time [PMID:11163936].

Synthèse des preuves

The current evidence is based entirely on in vitro studies, animal models (mice, zebrafish, rats), and computational simulations (molecular docking). There are no human clinical trials provided.
