Question 1

How does Dalbergia odorifera work to relieve pain and improve circulation?

Accepted Answer

Dalbergia odorifera contains bioactive flavonoids including liquiritigenin, isoliquiritigenin, butein, and formononetin that exert anti-inflammatory and cardioprotective effects. These compounds modulate inflammatory pathways, improve microcirculation, and support cardiovascular function through antioxidant activity. In Traditional Chinese Medicine, it 'moves blood' and relieves stasis, which corresponds to improved circulation and reduced pain signaling. Evidence level: C (preliminary clinical evidence).

Question 2

Does Dalbergia odorifera interact with blood thinners or other medications?

Accepted Answer

Dalbergia odorifera may interact with anticoagulant and antiplatelet medications such as warfarin, aspirin, or clopidogrel due to its blood-moving properties, potentially increasing bleeding risk. Patients taking cardiovascular medications should consult a healthcare provider before use, as this herb affects circulation and may alter drug efficacy. Limited pharmacokinetic data exists for specific drug interactions. Evidence level: C. Always inform your physician about all herbal supplements.

Question 3

What is the recommended dosage for Dalbergia odorifera?

Accepted Answer

The typical adult dosage of Dalbergia odorifera is 3-6 grams of dried heartwood daily, prepared as a decoction. Standardized extracts are sometimes used at approximately 300mg daily. Dosage should be adjusted based on individual condition, formulation type, and practitioner guidance. This herb should not be used long-term without professional supervision. Evidence level: C (preliminary clinical evidence and traditional use).

Question 4

Is Dalbergia odorifera safe during pregnancy?

Accepted Answer

Dalbergia odorifera is contraindicated during pregnancy and should be avoided. As a blood-moving herb in Traditional Chinese Medicine, it may stimulate uterine contractions and increase the risk of miscarriage or premature labor. Women who are pregnant, attempting to conceive, or breastfeeding should not use this herb. It is also contraindicated in bleeding disorders and yin deficiency conditions. Evidence level: Traditional/Expert consensus.

Question 5

What conditions is Dalbergia odorifera used to treat?

Accepted Answer

Dalbergia odorifera is used in Traditional Chinese Medicine primarily for moving blood, relieving pain, and stopping bleeding. Common indications include abdominal pain, traumatic injuries, cardiovascular conditions, and vomiting of blood. The herb's anti-inflammatory properties make it useful for pain associated with blood stasis patterns. Modern research has explored potential cardioprotective applications, though clinical evidence remains preliminary. Evidence level: C.

Question 6

What are the side effects of Dalbergia odorifera?

Accepted Answer

Dalbergia odorifera may cause mild gastrointestinal upset including nausea, stomach discomfort, or loose stools in some individuals. More serious adverse effects are rare but may occur in sensitive individuals or with excessive dosing. This herb should not be used by those with bleeding disorders, yin deficiency, or during pregnancy. Discontinue use if adverse reactions occur and consult a qualified healthcare practitioner. Evidence level: Traditional/C.
