Question 1

How does Dictamnus albus work for skin conditions?

Accepted Answer

Dictamnus albus root bark contains active compounds such as dictamine, skimmianine, and fraxinellone. These constituents exhibit anti-inflammatory, antifungal, and antibacterial properties, which help address the damp-heat pathogenic factors often associated with skin disorders in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). Specifically, dictamine contributes to the herb's ability to clear heat and dry dampness, making it effective for treating eczema, rashes, and jaundice. Evidence level: C.

Question 2

Is Dictamnus albus safe to take during pregnancy?

Accepted Answer

No, Dictamnus albus is contraindicated during pregnancy and is considered unsafe. The herb is used in TCM to clear heat and promote blood circulation, properties which may stimulate uterine contractions and pose a risk of miscarriage. Safety data for breastfeeding women is insufficient. Women who are pregnant or trying to conceive should avoid this herb entirely. It is also contraindicated for children. Evidence level: Traditional.

Question 3

What is the recommended dosage for Dictamnus albus root bark?

Accepted Answer

The standard adult dosage for Dictamnus albus root bark is typically 4.5 to 9 grams when prepared as a decoction. In Traditional Chinese Medicine, it is often combined with other herbs to enhance its effects on clearing heat and drying dampness for conditions like rheumatism or skin disorders. It should be prepared according to specific TCM guidelines to ensure safety. Evidence level: Traditional.

Question 4

Does Dictamnus albus interact with medications?

Accepted Answer

There is limited clinical data regarding specific drug interactions for Dictamnus albus. However, due to its alkaloid content (such as dictamine and skimmianine) and potential effects on liver metabolism, caution is advised when combining it with other hepatotoxic drugs or medications metabolized by liver enzymes. Because it is used to treat jaundice, patients taking liver-affecting medications should consult a healthcare provider before use. Evidence level: C.

Question 5

What are the side effects of using Dictamnus albus?

Accepted Answer

Reported side effects include nausea and gastrointestinal discomfort. A significant safety concern involves photosensitization, particularly contact with the fresh plant, which can cause skin irritation or dermatitis upon exposure to sunlight. While the dried root bark is generally used medicinally to mitigate this risk, users should still monitor for skin reactions. Those with sensitive skin should exercise caution when handling or consuming preparations of this herb. Evidence level: Traditional.
