Dodonaea Viscosa (Dodonaea viscosa): Benefits, Dosage, Safety & Evidence

Questions fréquentes

How does Dodonaea viscosa work to reduce inflammation?

Dodonaea viscosa exerts its anti-inflammatory effects through active compounds like flavonoids, hautriwaic acid, and dodoneine. These constituents have demonstrated the ability to inhibit inflammatory mediators, such as prostaglandins and cytokines, in preclinical studies. The plant's tannins and saponins also provide astringent properties that support wound healing by contracting tissues and reducing microbial growth. Current evidence is rated Level C, based primarily on animal and in vitro models rather than human clinical trials.

Does Dodonaea viscosa interact with any medications?

Currently, there is limited clinical data regarding specific drug interactions for Dodonaea viscosa. However, due to its traditional use for inflammation and fever, it may theoretically interact with anticoagulants or antiplatelet medications. Compounds like dodoneine may affect smooth muscle relaxation, potentially interacting with antihypertensive drugs. Patients taking prescription medications, particularly blood thinners or blood pressure regulators, should consult a healthcare professional before use. Evidence regarding interactions remains theoretical (Level C).

What is the recommended dosage for Dodonaea viscosa leaf tea?

The standard traditional adult dosage for Dodonaea viscosa is a leaf decoction taken one cup at a time, two to three times daily. To prepare, leaves are boiled in water to extract active compounds. Users should strictly adhere to recommended amounts, as excessive consumption may lead to mild digestive upset. Due to the lack of standardized clinical trials (Evidence Level C), it is best to start with lower amounts to assess tolerance.

Is Dodonaea viscosa safe to use during pregnancy?

Dodonaea viscosa is considered unsafe for use during pregnancy. Traditional evidence and pharmacological profiles indicate that the herb may possess uterine stimulant properties, which could lead to miscarriage or premature labor. Consequently, it is contraindicated for pregnant women. There is insufficient safety data regarding use during breastfeeding, so nursing mothers should also avoid this herb. Always consult a healthcare provider before using herbal supplements during pregnancy.

Can Dodonaea viscosa be used for toothaches and fever?

Dodonaea viscosa is widely used in traditional medicine across Africa, Asia, and Australia to treat toothaches and fevers. For toothaches, the leaves are often chewed or applied topically to the affected area to relieve pain. For fevers, a leaf decoction is consumed to induce cooling. While animal studies support these antipyretic and analgesic properties, human clinical trials are lacking (Evidence Level C). It should be used as a complementary therapy, not a replacement for professional dental or medical care.

Résumé

Dodonaea viscosa is an evergreen shrub used in traditional medicine to treat various human diseases, including wounds, inflammation, and gastrointestinal issues [PMID:35889337, 36817128, 37426815, 41696140].

Contexte

Dodonaea viscosa (also known as 'Sinatha' or hop bush) is a member of the Sapindaceae family found in tropical and subtropical regions worldwide, including Australia, Saudi Arabia, Mexico, and Hawaii [PMID:32874121, 35744969, 35931856, 36817128, 40509161, 41696140].

Usages traditionnels

Traditionally used to treat wounds [PMID:36817128], rashes and skin diseases [PMID:40509161], inflammatory processes, and gastrointestinal diseases [PMID:37426815].

Composés actifs

The plant contains flavonoids (including isorhamnetin, kaempferol, quercetin, and prenylated flavonoids visconaeas A-F) [PMID:37426815, 39426434], diterpenoids (nor-clerodane, labdane, and dimeric clerodane diterpenoids) [PMID:21587522, 33390520, 33957537, 28006912], saponins (such as Dodonaea viscosa saponin A) [PMID:35889337], and scopoletin [PMID:33390520].

Mécanisme d'action

In colorectal cancer cells, it induces cytotoxicity and cell death via the regulation of caspase 3 and p53 [PMID:37426815]. In insect larvae, saponins may target the gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) system and affect detoxification enzymes [PMID:35889337].
