Résumé
Ferula assa-foetida is an oleo-gum-resin obtained from the roots of the Ferula assa-foetida plant, traditionally used for various medicinal purposes and as a culinary spice [PMID:31629871, PMID:21130854].
Contexte
Asafoetida is an oleo-gum-resin exudate from the roots of Ferula assa-foetida L. and other Ferula species, distributed across central Asia and the Mediterranean area [PMID:31629871, PMID:25657791].
Usages traditionnels
Traditionally used to treat asthma, gastrointestinal disorders, intestinal parasites [PMID:31629871, PMID:21130854], and is considered in Iranian traditional medicine to be sedative, analgesic, carminative, antispasmodic, diuretic, antihelmintic, emmenagogue, and expectorant [PMID:25657791]. It has also been used for hysteria and other nervous disorders [PMID:33456735].
Composés actifs
Main compounds include monoterpenes, sulfide compounds, polyphenols [PMID:37034135], sugars, sesquiterpene coumarins (such as farnesiferol C, conferone, badrakemin, feslol, isosamarcandin, and samarcandin), and polysulfides [PMID:21130854, PMID:28948835, PMID:26134757]. Specific identified metabolites include foetisulfide C, assafoetidnol A, gumosin, and flabellilobin (A/B) [PMID:36738001].
Mécanisme d'action
Evidence suggests activities including antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and anti-apoptotic effects [PMID:28725631, PMID:33456735]. It may modulate the microbiome-gut-brain axis to alleviate dyspepsia symptoms [PMID:41054174] and exhibit antinociceptive effects in thermal and acetic acid-induced tests [PMID:25657791].
Preuves cliniques
Preuve BFunctional Dyspepsia
A self-emulsifying hydrogel formulation (250 mg/d) significantly improved symptoms of early satiety, bloating, and heartburn [PMID:41054174]
Preuve BPolycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS)
Administration of 100 mg twice daily for 3 months significantly decreased the number of ovarian follicles compared to placebo [PMID:37655000]
Preuve DCancer
Organosulfides from the gum showed significant in-vitro inhibition of SKOV3 and A549 cancer cell growth [PMID:33960249]; in-vivo studies in mice showed antitumor effects against 4T1 breast cancer cells [PMID:28690055]
Preuve DDiabetes/Nephropathy
In rat models, 50 mg/kg oral dose reduced glucose, cholesterol, and HbA1c, and decreased serum creatinine and urea [PMID:38910415]; ethanolic extract (150-250 mg/kg) improved serum glucose and insulin levels [PMID:35474229]
Preuve DPain/Inflammation
Demonstrated antinociceptive effects in mice [PMID:25657791] and anti-inflammatory effects against TNF-α-stimulated HUVECs in vitro [PMID:36091666]
Preuve D
Sécurité et effets indésirables
In rodents, acute oral doses up to 5 g/kg and subchronic doses of 250 mg/kg for 28 days showed no significant changes in body weight or hematological parameters, though mild liver thrombosis and glomerular tuft atrophy were noted [PMID:27047139]. Asafoetida oil is considered an irritant to skin and eyes, and a dermal and respiratory sensitiser [PMID:36570350].
Synthèse des preuves
Evidence is primarily based on in-vitro studies and animal models (Level D), with limited clinical evidence from small-scale RCTs (Level B) regarding PCOS and functional dyspepsia.
