Linum usitatissimum
Cultivation traditionnelle de céréales riches en acides gras oméga-3, lignanes et mucilage. Utilisé dans la médecine ayurvédique, européenne et méditerranéenne.
Flaxseed oil, derived from Linum usitatissimum seeds, is the richest plant source of alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), an omega-3 fatty acid, along with lignans and mucilage. It is used as a laxative, for cardiovascular support, and for menopausal symptoms due to its phytoestrogenic lignans. The oil is also a traditional industrial and medicinal crop.
ALA is partially converted to EPA and DHA via delta-6 desaturase, though conversion is limited in humans; it also reduces inflammation by competing with arachidonic acid in the COX and LOX pathways. Lignans such as secoisolariciresinol are metabolized by gut microbiota to enterolignans (enterodiol and enterolactone), which act as selective estrogen receptor modulators (SERMs) with weak estrogenic/anti-estrogenic activity. Mucilage provides bulk-forming laxative effects by increasing stool water content and promoting peristalsis.
