Question 1

How does Ge Jie (Gekko gecko) work for asthma?

Accepted Answer

Ge Jie works by tonifying Lung Qi and Kidney Yang, a mechanism known in Traditional Chinese Medicine as 'assisting the Kidney to grasp Qi.' This action helps resolve chronic asthma and coughing where the body fails to hold Qi down. While the exact pharmacological mechanism requires further study (Evidence Level C), its active compounds—primarily amino acids, proteins, and fatty acids—are believed to support respiratory function and systemic vitality. It is traditionally used to treat deficiency patterns rather than acute asthma attacks.

Question 2

Does Ge Jie interact with prescription medications?

Accepted Answer

There is limited clinical data regarding specific drug interactions for Ge Jie (Evidence Level C). However, because it is a potent Yang tonic, it may theoretically interact with stimulant medications or hormone therapies. Patients taking immunosuppressants should exercise caution, as animal-derived substances can sometimes trigger immune responses. Always consult a qualified practitioner before combining Ge Jie with prescription drugs to avoid unforeseen contraindications or reduced efficacy.

Question 3

What is the recommended dosage for Ge Jie powder?

Accepted Answer

The standard adult dosage for Ge Jie is typically 3 to 6 grams of powder daily, usually divided into smaller doses. It is often processed by dry-frying or baking to enhance its tonifying properties. Because it is an animal product, quality and sourcing are critical to ensure safety. Dosage should always be adjusted by a qualified herbalist based on the individual's specific diagnosis, such as the severity of Kidney Yang deficiency or chronic respiratory issues.

Question 4

Is Ge Jie safe to take during pregnancy?

Accepted Answer

Ge Jie is considered unsafe during pregnancy and is strictly contraindicated. As a powerful Yang tonic, it strongly stimulates the body's energy and heat, which can pose a risk of fetal instability or miscarriage. Additionally, Traditional Chinese Medicine advises against using substances that strongly move Qi during pregnancy. Women who are pregnant or breastfeeding should avoid this herb entirely and consult their healthcare provider for safer alternatives for respiratory or vitality support.

Question 5

Can Ge Jie help with erectile dysfunction or impotence?

Accepted Answer

Ge Jie is traditionally used to treat impotence caused by Kidney Yang deficiency. It is believed to strengthen the 'Ming Men' or Life Gate fire, thereby enhancing libido and sexual function. However, clinical evidence supporting these effects is limited (Evidence Level C). It is most effective when combined with other Yang-tonifying herbs in a formula tailored to the individual. It should not be used for impotence caused by excess heat or Yin deficiency.
