Question 1

How does glasswort work medicinally?

Accepted Answer

Glasswort contains saponins, mineral salts, flavonoids, and iodine, which contribute to its medicinal properties. The saponins may support digestive function through mild stimulation of digestive secretions. Its rich mineral content, particularly sodium and iodine, provides electrolyte and thyroid support. The flavonoids offer antioxidant activity that may help with inflammatory conditions like rheumatism. Evidence level: C.

Question 2

Does glasswort interact with blood pressure medications?

Accepted Answer

Yes, glasswort may interact with antihypertensive medications due to its high sodium content, potentially reducing their effectiveness. It may also interact with diuretics and medications affecting kidney function. Those taking lithium should exercise caution, as sodium levels can affect lithium excretion. Always consult a healthcare provider before combining glasswort with prescription medications.

Question 3

What is the recommended dosage for glasswort?

Accepted Answer

As a food, glasswort can be consumed freely when properly prepared. For medicinal purposes, the typical adult dosage is 10-20 grams of fresh herb daily. It can be eaten raw in salads, steamed as a vegetable, or taken as a prepared extract. Evidence level: C. Start with lower amounts and adjust based on individual tolerance and sodium intake considerations.

Question 4

Is glasswort safe during pregnancy?

Accepted Answer

Glasswort is considered unsafe during pregnancy. Its high sodium content may disrupt fluid balance and strain kidney function during pregnancy. The concentrated mineral salts pose potential risks to fetal development. Insufficient safety data exists for breastfeeding use. Pregnant and nursing individuals should avoid glasswort supplements and consult a qualified healthcare provider before use.

Question 5

What is glasswort used for in herbal medicine?

Accepted Answer

Glasswort has been traditionally used for digestive complaints, rheumatism support, and as a mineral-rich tonic. Coastal communities valued it as a nutritive mineral source, particularly for iodine and trace minerals. It has served as a seaside food-medicine for centuries. Evidence level: C. Modern applications continue in both gourmet cooking and herbal practice.

Question 6

Who should avoid taking glasswort?

Accepted Answer

Individuals with hypertension should avoid glasswort due to its high sodium content, which may elevate blood pressure. Those with kidney disease should not use it, as the mineral load may strain renal function. People on sodium-restricted diets or taking blood pressure medications should also avoid glasswort. Consult a healthcare provider if you have underlying health conditions.
