Grewia ferruginea (Grewia mollis) is an East African tree whose bark is traditionally used as a nutritive tonic and for anemia, malaria, diarrhea, and general weakness. Its active compounds include flavonoids, tannins, saponins, and mucilage, which contribute to its anti-anemic, antimicrobial, and tonic properties. Evidence is limited (Level C) but supports its traditional uses.
The anti-anemic effect is attributed to iron-chelating flavonoids and saponins that may enhance erythropoiesis and improve iron absorption. Tannins and flavonoids exhibit antimicrobial activity by disrupting bacterial cell walls and inhibiting efflux pumps.
