Haemanthus coccineus
South African bulb with brilliant scarlet flower heads, traditional Khoikhoi medicine plant.
Haemanthus coccineus is a South African bulb traditionally used by the Khoikhoi for colds and fevers. Modern research indicates anti-inflammatory, antiviral, antibacterial, and analgesic activities, attributed to alkaloids such as haemanthamine, lycorine, and narciclasine. Evidence is limited (C) but supports its traditional uses.
The alkaloids haemanthamine and lycorine inhibit protein synthesis and exhibit antiviral activity by interfering with viral replication. Narciclasine has anti-inflammatory effects via inhibition of NF-κB and COX-2 pathways. The analgesic action may involve opioid receptor modulation and reduction of prostaglandin synthesis.
