Hawthorn Berry Chinese (Crataegus pinnatifida): Benefits, Dosage, Safety & Evidence

Questions fréquentes

How does Chinese hawthorn berry work to improve digestion?

Chinese hawthorn berry (Crataegus pinnatifida) works through multiple mechanisms. Its active compounds, including vitexin, hyperoside, and oligomeric proanthocyanidins, stimulate digestive enzyme secretion and enhance gastric motility. The herb promotes the breakdown of proteins and fats, making it particularly effective for food stagnation from meat and fatty foods. Additionally, ursolic acid contributes to its cardiovascular benefits by improving blood circulation and supporting heart function. Evidence Level: A.

Does Chinese hawthorn berry interact with blood pressure medications?

Yes, Chinese hawthorn berry may interact with antihypertensive medications. Due to its blood pressure-lowering effects, combining it with prescription blood pressure drugs could cause additive hypotension, potentially leading to dizziness, fainting, or inadequate blood pressure control. Patients taking beta-blockers, ACE inhibitors, calcium channel blockers, or diuretics should consult a qualified healthcare provider before using hawthorn berry. Close monitoring of blood pressure is recommended if concurrent use is medically supervised. Evidence Level: B.

What is the recommended dosage for Chinese hawthorn berry?

The standard adult dosage for Chinese hawthorn berry is 9-15 grams of dried berries daily, typically prepared as a decoction. For standardized extracts, the recommended dose is 300-600mg daily. Dosage may vary based on individual constitution, the specific condition being treated, and the form of preparation. In Traditional Chinese Medicine, practitioners often adjust doses based on pulse and tongue diagnosis. Always follow the guidance of a qualified herbalist or healthcare provider. Evidence Level: A.

Is Chinese hawthorn berry safe to take during pregnancy?

No, Chinese hawthorn berry is contraindicated during pregnancy. The herb has blood-activating properties that may stimulate uterine contractions and potentially compromise pregnancy. Traditional Chinese Medicine classifies hawthorn as a substance that invigorates blood circulation, which poses risks during gestation. Women who are pregnant or attempting to conceive should avoid this herb entirely. Nursing mothers should also exercise caution and consult a healthcare provider before use. Evidence Level: Traditional.

What is the difference between Chinese hawthorn and European hawthorn?

Chinese hawthorn (Crataegus pinnatifida) and European hawthorn (Crataegus monogyna or Crataegus laevigata) are different species with distinct traditional uses. Chinese hawthorn is primarily used in Traditional Chinese Medicine for digestive complaints, specifically to dissolve food stagnation from meat and fatty foods, while European hawthorn is more commonly used for cardiovascular conditions in Western herbalism. Both species share similar active compounds, including flavonoids and proanthocyanidins, but their therapeutic applications differ based on traditional use and clinical evidence. Evidence Level: A.

What are the side effects of taking Chinese hawthorn berry?

Chinese hawthorn berry may cause gastrointestinal irritation, particularly when taken on an empty stomach. Common side effects include hyperacidity, stomach discomfort, and mild digestive upset. For this reason, it is recommended to take hawthorn with food. The herb is contraindicated in individuals with spleen Qi deficiency, as its sour and descending properties may worsen symptoms such as loose stools, fatigue, and poor appetite. Those with gastric ulcers or acid reflux should use caution. Evidence Level: Traditional.

Résumé

Crataegus pinnatifida is a traditional Chinese medicinal food used for cardiovascular protection, lipid reduction, and digestive promotion [PMID:36228891].

Contexte

Crataegus pinnatifida, also known as 'Shan Zha', is a member of the Rosaceae family distributed in North China, Europe, and North America [PMID:36228891]. It is recognized as a medicine and food homology herb with a long history of use in China [PMID:36228891].

Usages traditionnels

Traditionally used to treat indigestion, cardiodynia, thoracalgia, hernia, postpartum blood stagnation, hemafecia, stagnation of meat, and gastric distention [PMID:36228891, 36179124, 24487567, 39716512].

Composés actifs

The plant contains flavonoids (including hyperoside, vitexin, and leucocyanidin), triterpenoids (such as ursolic acid and oleanolic acid), polyphenols (epicatechin, procyanidins, chlorogenic acid), polysaccharides, phenylpropanoids, organic acids, and essential oils [PMID:31217924, 24487567, 36179124, 23222867, 39716512, 41365192].

Mécanisme d'action

Mechanisms include the increase of PPARα expression in the liver to improve hyperlipidemia [PMID:21823058], inhibition of the SCAP-SREBP2-LDLR pathway via sPLA2-IIA signaling in macrophages to attenuate atherosclerosis [PMID:38442806], dual activation of AMPK/NRF2 for mitochondria repair in hepatic steatosis [PMID:41365192], and regulation of intestinal microbiota and arginine biosynthesis to alleviate colitis [PMID:40315641].
