Hedychium coronarium
Fragrant ginger family flower from Asia and Americas used in folk medicine for headache, fever, and anti-inflammatory conditions.
Hedychium coronarium (white ginger lily) is a fragrant plant from the Zingiberaceae family, traditionally used in Asian and American folk medicine for headache, fever, and inflammatory conditions. Its rhizome contains bioactive labdane diterpenes such as hedychenone and 8β,17-epoxylabd-12-ene-15,16-dial, along with flavonoids, which contribute to its analgesic, anti-inflammatory, and antipyretic properties. Evidence is limited to preclinical and traditional use (Level C).
Hedychenone and related labdane diterpenes inhibit cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) and 5-lipoxygenase (5-LOX), reducing prostaglandin and leukotriene synthesis, thereby exerting anti-inflammatory and analgesic effects. These compounds also modulate nuclear factor-kappa B (NF-κB) signaling, decreasing pro-inflammatory cytokine production. Flavonoids present in the rhizome provide additional antioxidant activity by scavenging reactive oxygen species and chelating metal ions.
