Illicium verum (Illicium verum): Benefits, Dosage, Safety & Evidence

Questions fréquentes

How does star anise work as an antiviral?

Star anise contains shikimic acid, a primary precursor used in the pharmaceutical synthesis of oseltamivir (Tamiflu), which inhibits viral neuraminidase. Additionally, its volatile oil component, anethole, demonstrates antimicrobial properties by disrupting microbial cell membranes (Evidence Level: C). These compounds collectively support its traditional use for respiratory infections and immune support.

Is star anise safe to take during pregnancy?

Star anise is considered unsafe during pregnancy and breastfeeding due to its estrogenic compounds, such as anethole. These constituents can potentially stimulate uterine contractions or disrupt hormonal balance (Evidence Level: C). While small culinary amounts are occasionally debated, medicinal doses are strictly contraindicated for pregnant women to avoid complications.

What is the recommended dosage for star anise tea?

The standard adult dosage for digestive support is 1-3 grams of dried pods steeped as a tea, taken 2-3 times daily. Alternatively, liquid extracts of 300-500mg are utilized for convenience (Evidence Level: C). Users should ensure they are using true Chinese star anise (Illicium verum) rather than the toxic Japanese variety to avoid adverse neurological effects.

Does star anise interact with any medications?

Star anise may interact with hormone-sensitive conditions and medications. Due to its estrogenic effects, it could interfere with hormone replacement therapy, birth control pills, or conditions like breast cancer (Evidence Level: C). Additionally, it may affect how the liver processes certain drugs. Patients taking pharmaceutical medications should consult a healthcare provider before use.

What are the side effects of star anise?

Common side effects include gastrointestinal upset and mild allergic reactions. A significant safety concern arises from accidental adulteration with Japanese star anise (Illicium anisatum), which contains neurotoxins causing seizures and vomiting (Evidence Level: C). Estrogenic effects may also occur, posing risks for those with hormone-sensitive conditions. Sourcing verified Illicium verum is essential to prevent toxicity.

Résumé

Illicium verum, commonly known as star anise, is an aromatic evergreen tree used globally as a culinary spice and a medicinal herb in Traditional Chinese Medicine [PMID:31997473, PMID:37959797].

Contexte

Star anise is a medium-sized evergreen tree with star-shaped fruit, widely distributed throughout southwestern and southeastern parts of Asia, particularly China and Vietnam [PMID:31997473, PMID:35163914].

Usages traditionnels

In Traditional Chinese Medicine, it is used to warm Yang, disperse cold, regulate Qi, relieve pain, and as an expectorant [PMID:37959797, PMID:35163914, PMID:21549817].

Composés actifs

Key compounds include shikimic acid, (E)-anethole (the dominant component of its essential oil), limonene, alpha-pinene, estragole, flavonoids, and various monoterpenoids and sesquiterpenoids [PMID:31997473, PMID:38067422, PMID:38067422, PMID:33092919, PMID:35163914].

Mécanisme d'action

Star anise polysaccharides may inhibit pancreatic lipase, angiotensin-converting enzyme, and alpha-glucosidase [PMID:39053285]. Its essential oil components, such as limonene and anisaldehyde, exhibit antioxidant activity by scavenging free radicals [PMID:37201258].

Preuves cliniques

Preuve DDiabetes

Aqueous extract of fruits reduced blood glucose levels in streptozotocin-induced diabetic rats [PMID:37612867]

Preuve DBreast Cancer (MCF-7 and MDA-MB-231 cell lines)

Methanolic extracts demonstrated anticancer effects and induced apoptosis in human breast cancer cell lines in vitro [PMID:36694772, PMID:38196489]

Preuve DViral Infections

Compounds from the fruit, specifically (-)-bornyl p-coumarate, showed strong antiviral activity against influenza; aqueous extracts showed anti-CyHV-2 effects in goldfish [PMID:35293738, PMID:40774550]

Sécurité et effets indésirables

Illicium verum can be contaminated with highly toxic Japanese star anise (I. anisatum) or poisonous star anise (I. lanceolatum), which contain neurotoxic sesquiterpenes [PMID:21549817]. Some fractions of the essential oil may contain estragole, which is identified as a genotoxic carcinogen [PMID:37869251].

Synthèse des preuves

The current evidence is primarily based on in vitro studies, animal models, and literature reviews; there is a lack of human clinical trials.
