Intellect Tree (Celastrus paniculatus): Benefits, Dosage, Safety & Evidence

Questions fréquentes

How does Celastrus paniculatus work as a nootropic?

Celastrus paniculatus seeds contain active compounds like celastrine and paniculatine, which are believed to enhance cognitive function. Research suggests it works by improving antioxidant activity in the brain, reducing oxidative stress, and potentially increasing acetylcholine levels, a neurotransmitter vital for memory and learning. Animal studies indicate neuroprotective properties that support neuron health. While the exact mechanism requires more human clinical trials (Evidence Level C), traditional Ayurvedic use suggests it acts as a nervine stimulant to sharpen intellect.

Does Intellect Tree interact with any medications?

There is currently limited clinical data regarding specific drug interactions for Celastrus paniculatus (Evidence Level D). However, because it may affect neurotransmitter activity and cognitive processing, caution is advised when combining it with other nootropics, antidepressants, or sedatives. Its potential impact on liver enzymes responsible for drug metabolism has not been well-established in human trials. Always consult a qualified healthcare provider before adding this herb to your regimen if you are taking prescription medications.

What is the recommended dosage for Celastrus paniculatus seeds?

The standard adult dosage for Celastrus paniculatus is typically 5 to 10 seeds daily, or 250 to 500 mg of seed oil. Because the seeds have a potent effect, it is best to start with a lower dose to assess tolerance. The oil is often preferred for easier absorption and to avoid the potential gastrointestinal irritation associated with consuming whole seeds. Exceeding the recommended dosage can lead to toxicity, so strict adherence to these guidelines is essential.

Is Celastrus paniculatus safe to take during pregnancy?

No, Celastrus paniculatus is considered unsafe during pregnancy and should be strictly avoided. Traditional use and available safety data indicate that the herb possesses emmenagogue properties, meaning it can stimulate blood flow in the pelvic region and uterus, potentially leading to miscarriage. Additionally, the seeds can be toxic in large doses, posing a risk to fetal development. Women who are breastfeeding should also avoid this herb due to a lack of safety data.

What are the benefits of Celastrus paniculatus oil for the brain?

Celastrus oil is traditionally used in Ayurveda as a 'Medhya Rasayana,' or brain tonic, to enhance intellect and memory. Preliminary research (Evidence Level C) suggests it may improve cognitive retention and recall by protecting brain cells from oxidative damage. Users often take it to support mental clarity, focus, and nervous system stamina. It is also used externally in oil massages to relieve rheumatic pain, though internal use is the primary method for cognitive enhancement.

Résumé

Celastrus paniculatus, also known as Jyotishmati or Malkangni, is an evergreen climbing shrub used in traditional Indian medicine as a nootropic and neuroprotective agent [PMID:34529902, PMID:35005853].

Contexte

Celastrus paniculatus is a woody climber belonging to the family Celastraceae, distributed throughout the tropical and subtropical regions of India [PMID:25364201, PMID:35199395].

Usages traditionnels

It is used in Ayurveda, Unani, and Siddha systems to treat neurological disorders including cognitive dysfunction, paralysis, epilepsy, insomnia, and mentally retarded children, as well as rheumatism, arthritis, sciatica, leprosy, dyspepsia, and stomach ulcers [PMID:34529902, PMID:28066108, PMID:28816560, PMID:31129308]. Leaves are traditionally used for headaches and eye disease [PMID:25364201].

Composés actifs

The plant contains a diverse phytoprofile including alkaloids (celastrine, celapanin, celapagin, paniculatine, maymyrsine), sesquiterpenes (beta-dihydroagarofuranoids, malkanguniol, malkangunin, valerenal, globulol, viridiflorol, cubenol), monoterpenes (linalool, alpha-terpinyl acetate, nerol acetate), triterpenoids (lupeol, pristimerin, paniculatadiol, zeylasteral, zeylasterone, beta-amyrin, squalene), diterpenoids (phytone, isophytol), steroids (beta-sitosterol, carpesterol benzoate), and flavonoids (paniculatin) [PMID:34529902, PMID:35199395].

Mécanisme d'action

Mechanisms include the reduction of acetylcholinesterase activity to improve memory [PMID:20645820], free-radical scavenging and antioxidant activity to attenuate neuronal death [PMID:16360930], and the amelioration of NF-kB mediated neuroinflammation and synaptic plasticity [PMID:36809523]. It may also exert neuroprotective effects against apoptotic cell death via GSK-3beta [PMID:38357231].
