Jatropha gossypifolia is a tropical shrub from the Americas, traditionally used in Caribbean and Latin American folk medicine for wound healing and skin infections. Its key active compounds include the diterpene jatrophone, along with flavonoids and tannins, which contribute to its antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties. Despite widespread traditional use, clinical evidence remains limited (Level C).
Jatrophone exhibits antibacterial activity by disrupting bacterial cell membranes and inhibiting protein synthesis. Flavonoids and tannins provide anti-inflammatory effects through inhibition of cyclooxygenase (COX) and lipoxygenase (LOX) pathways, reducing prostaglandin and leukotriene synthesis. Additionally, tannins promote wound healing via astringent action, precipitating proteins to form a protective layer and reduce exudate.
