Jatropha gossypifolia (Jatropha gossypifolia): Benefits, Dosage, Safety & Evidence

Questions fréquentes

How does Jatropha gossypifolia work for wound healing?

Jatropha gossypifolia promotes wound healing through antibacterial and anti-inflammatory mechanisms. The plant contains tannins and flavonoids, which act as astringents to constrict tissues and reduce wound exudate. Additionally, compounds like jatrophone and phenolic acids inhibit bacterial growth, protecting the wound from infection. These constituents work synergistically to reduce local inflammation and accelerate tissue repair, supporting its traditional use in tropical regions for treating cuts and skin ulcers (Evidence Level: C).

Is Jatropha gossypifolia safe to take during pregnancy?

No, Jatropha gossypifolia is considered unsafe during pregnancy and breastfeeding. The plant contains compounds that can stimulate uterine contractions, potentially leading to miscarriage or premature labor. Internal use is particularly dangerous due to the presence of toxic phorbol esters and jatrophone, which cause severe gastrointestinal irritation. Women who are pregnant or nursing should avoid both internal and topical use of this herb to prevent adverse outcomes (Evidence Level: C).

What is the recommended dosage for Jatropha gossypifolia?

The primary dosage recommendation for Jatropha gossypifolia is strictly for topical use. Traditionally, a poultice is made from crushed fresh leaves and applied directly to wounds or skin infections. Alternatively, the plant's latex is applied sparingly to affected areas. Internal use is strongly discouraged due to toxicity risks, and there are no established safe oral dosages. Users should perform a patch test first to rule out skin sensitization before wider application (Evidence Level: Traditional).

Does Jatropha gossypifolia interact with medications?

While specific clinical studies are lacking, Jatropha gossypifolia poses theoretical interaction risks. Due to its potential to irritate the gastrointestinal lining, it should not be combined with NSAIDs or aspirin, as this may increase the risk of stomach ulcers. Preliminary evidence suggests the plant may affect blood coagulation, so concurrent use with anticoagulant drugs like warfarin requires caution and medical supervision. Always inform your doctor about herbal use (Evidence Level: D).

What are the side effects of using Jatropha gossypifolia?

Side effects vary by application method. Internal ingestion frequently causes gastrointestinal distress, including nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea, due to toxic compounds like phorbol esters. Topical application can lead to contact dermatitis, redness, or skin sensitization in sensitive individuals. The latex is particularly known for causing irritation. To minimize risks, internal consumption should be avoided, and topical preparations should be tested on a small skin area before full application (Evidence Level: C).

Résumé

Jatropha gossypifolia, also known as bellyache bush or fignut, is a plant used in traditional medicine for conditions including diabetes, epilepsy, and bacterial infections [PMID:37817655, PMID:30695706, PMID:34223167].

Contexte

Jatropha gossypifolia (Euphorbiaceae family) is a plant found in regions such as Nigeria, Ghana, and Thailand [PMID:37817655, PMID:34223167, PMID:19226837]. It is commonly referred to as 'fignut', 'Lapa-lapa', or 'bellyache bush' [PMID:37817655, PMID:30695706].

Usages traditionnels

Ethnobotanical reports indicate use for the treatment and management of diabetes [PMID:37817655], management of epilepsy [PMID:34223167], bacterial infections, and lung cancer [PMID:22474940]. It is also traditionally used for memory function improvement [PMID:27180434].

Composés actifs

Identified compounds include the macrocyclic diterpene jatrophenone [PMID:12843600], the lathyrane diterpenoid abiodone [PMID:22474940], the cyclic heptapeptide cyclogossine A [PMID:8720387], and isogadain [PMID:17252424]. Seed oils contain 18.5% 12-hydroxyoctadec-cis-9-enoic acid (ricinoleic acid) [PMID:18060875]. Other constituents include flavonoids, terpenoids, and polyphenols [PMID:24525834].

Mécanisme d'action

In-silico studies suggest potential as inhibitors of aldose reductase, sorbitol dehydrogenase, dipeptidyl peptidase IV, α-amylase, and α-glucosidase for T2DM management [PMID:37817655]. Extracts have demonstrated the ability to stimulate glucose uptake in C2C12 myotubes and adipocytes [PMID:25859777]. Root, leaf, and stem bark extracts show inhibitory potential against acetylcholinesterase (AChE) and butyrylcholinesterase (BuChE) [PMID:27180434].
